Description
If unable to fill at the Highway Construction Technician II level, will consider applicants at the Highway Construction Technician I level at 16.30/hr. Applicants hired at this level do not have to possess an Associate's degree or meet the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) course requirements.
Examples of Work
Construction Technicians are responsible primarily for the inspection and verification of the quality and quantities of work for heavy highway construction projects. A person in this role will be expected to perform various materials testing routines on concrete, asphalt, soils, and other materials as required. This position also requires individuals to verify the location and quality of work matches the project plan set and contract. To this end, successful individuals will need to be able to read and interpret plans, contracts, and standard specifications as a regular part of their job. Often this will also include performing various survey related tasks utilizing rods, levels, tape measures, and GPS equipment. Technicians will also record and maintain accurate documentation of quantities installed by the contractor as well as a diary of the construction activities as they occur throughout the day. All official records are maintained digitally and technicians will be expected to utilize computers and various programs daily. Individuals will be expected to be able to work both as part of a team as well as individually with minimal supervision. This position assists with snow removal on highways and the interstate. Individuals will be required to operate snowplows during winter events.
Qualifications / Requirements
For Technician II:
REQUIREMENTS: Must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license. Experience in performing activities pertinent to construction work such as surveying, materials testing, or field inspections OR coursework or training in construction surveying, materials testing or inspections practices, and in using associated instruments and equipment.

PREFERRED: Experience in surveying, road construction, materials testing, record keeping, trigonometry, and geometry. Possession of a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL/ Experience in the operation of heavy equipment or snow removal equipment. Computer experience including work processing, spreadsheets, Sitemanager, Geopak and Microstation software.

OTHER: Applicants must have passed the NDOT Math, Plan Reading and Bridge Plan Reading courses. Associates degree in civil engineering technology or a related field, may be substituted for the completion of the NDOT courses. Applicants must provide copy of their degree and transcript. Must possess a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's license within 60 days of hire. Will be required to obtain and maintain various certifications such as concrete field and plant inspection, soil and aggregate, and traffic control. This position may require overnight travel. Regular and reliable attendance.

For Technician I:
REQUIREMENTS: No construction experience is required; on-the-job and formal training will be provided. Must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license. Excellent communication skills and basic computer skills.

Possession of a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL/ Experience in the operation of heavy equipment or snow removal equipment. Computer experience including work processing, spreadsheets, Sitemanager, Geopak and Microstation software.

OTHER: Must possess a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's license within 60 days of hire. Will be required to obtain and maintain various certifications such as concrete field and plant inspection, soil and aggregate, and traffic control. This position may require overnight travel. Regular and reliable attendance.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to communicate both orally and in writing: read and interpret plans and specifications; perform mathematical calculations. Skill in surveying, materials testing, construction inspection, and/or operating equipment, computers and associated software. Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds, climb, bend, stoop, walk long distances and work long hours in outdoor temperature extremes. Must be able to report to work outside scheduled work hours for snow and other highway emergencies within 30 minutes under normal driving conditions.
