Job Description Summary:

The Human Resources Generalist (or Senior HR Generalist) provides professional and procedural support and expertise in the administration of a broad range of human resources functions and/or programs at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM). This position requires a high degree of confidentiality and the ability to deal with highly sensitive information appropriately in compliance with institutional, state, and federal guidelines and statutes. This position reports to the Director of Human Resources.

This is a full-time, non-classified position; it is exempt from FLSA regulations concerning overtime. Title and base salary for the position shall be commensurate with experience and education. Not all activities of this position occur within the confines of an 8:00-4:30 schedule and may require evening and weekend scheduling as needed. The weekly schedule for this position will be established between the supervisor and the employee and approved given the needs of the department and WVSOM. This position has been designated as Essential. This means that when WVSOM is faced with an institutional emergency, employees in such positions may be required to remain at their work location or to report to work to protect, recover and continue operations at WVSOM. This position is not eligible for telework and must be in-person on the WVSOM Campus.

Education and Experience

  • Successful candidate will have an earned Bachelor's Degree.
  • Recent and Related Experience - 2 years
  • Higher Education HR Experience Preferred
  • For the position of Senior HR Generalist, 4 years of recent and related experience would be required, or a related Master's Degree and 2 years of recent and related experience.
  • A combination of recent and relevant education and experience may also be considered for this position.

Skills Required
  • Possess strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community and demonstrated ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with all constituents at WVSOM.
  • Thorough knowledge of federal and state labor laws, and the ability to quickly learn WVSOM personnel policies and processes.
  • Advanced working knowledge of personnel methods and techniques including recruitment, selection, job analysis, compensation, training, benefits, and employee relations practices and principles.
  • Ability to work well in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment with students, faculty, staff, and community
  • Must understand and appropriately apply human resources policies and principles.
  • Ability to offer training options to staff.
  • Ability to reason logically, analyze and solve problems including use of mediation, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate and initiate actions necessary to implement decisions or recommendations.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, as well as the ability to quickly learn the ERP and applicant tracking systems.
  • Must be able to work independently, with minimal coaching, but must also be able to work well in groups or teams.
  • Ability to protect confidential information and communicate with impeccable discretion in all matters related to employees and internal processes.
  • Ability to travel to on and off campus locations for meetings and conferences.
Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Administers a broad range of human resources functions or programs including, but not limited to: training and development; recruitment; employment; employee relations; classification and compensation; personnel records; and employee HR systems and database management.
  • Assists departments with recruitment needs as assigned from advertisement through onboarding.
  • Communicates and interprets human resources policies and procedures for administration, supervisors and employees. This includes counseling supervisors and employees on the application of policies and procedures and the resolution of conflict.
  • Investigates and resolves matters of significance including complex and unusual issues or employee complaints as requested.
  • Maintain employee personnel actions and records within the Banner HR system.
  • Analyzes federal and state laws, as well as WVSOM policies and procedures to ensure WVSOM HR programs are effective and consistent with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Serves as human resources generalist to faculty and staff by providing advice and guidance related to human resources matters, policies, and procedures.
  • Performs data analysis, prepares reports and/or presentations, monitors the effectiveness of HR policies and recommends revisions or modification to meet the needs of WVSOM.
  • May provide training and development services to increase workforce competence, employee engagement, or organizational capability.
  • Advises employees and supervisors regarding leave programs.
  • Assists employees with completing their annual performance evaluations.
  • This position also serves as a Title IX investigator and is required to attend and complete annual training as related.
  • Participates in Human Resources initiatives and projects.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
