The IT Infrastructure Specialist for System and Server Administration will play a significant role in creating, deploying, and maintaining system-based, production-level IT infrastructure services that are robust, high-quality, and reliable, meeting the needs of Technology Services' customers. Assume primary or secondary responsibilities for one or more services. Primarily support large-scale, complex infrastructure, including management of system and server infrastructure, on-premise or through cloud providers, support of client access and authorization to local and non-local systems and services and services in a Dev/Ops environment.

Job Summary
Play a significant role in creating, deploying, and maintaining system-based, production-level IT infrastructure services that are robust, high-quality, and reliable, meeting the needs of Technology Services' customers. Assume primary or secondary responsibilities for one or more services. Responsible for support of unit- or campus-level infrastructure, including management of system and server infrastructure, on-premise or through cloud providers, support of client access and authorization to local and non-local systems and services in a Dev/Ops environment.

Duties & Responsibilities

Manage day-to-day IT service operations.

  • Provide system/server/service administration and technical support, either locally or in cloud-hosted environments, including installation, patching, upgrading, monitoring, knowledge documentation, and troubleshooting. Responsible for on-call support and off-hours maintenance windows as needed.
  • Support unit IT system, infrastructure, and integration needs.
  • Recognize the need for and implement appropriate infrastructure components to support security policies and procedures.
  • Communicate with vendors or other third parties using predefined methods for ticket submission, support, and enhancement requests.
  • Identify and recommend process improvements, providing information for management analysis of recommendations.
  • Monitor and respond to key service metrics to ensure service performance and service level requirements.
  • Build and support technology systems and services, consulting with customers in their identification, evaluation, procurement, and implementation.
  • Participate in System and Server Administration teams and other cross-functional/matrix teams
Manage and administer systems, servers, applications.
  • Create and manage user accounts and permissions for tools' users and administrators.
  • Create and maintain documentation for various audiences. Train backup and other staff as necessary.
  • Support and foster user group discussions amongst campus IT professionals for support of services.
  • Adhere to interoperability standards and best practices as adopted by the organization.
  • Apply information systems solutions, decision-making, and capacity planning to align with current and future technology.
  • Participate in IT service requirements gathering and analysis. Provide input to business plans, system design product evaluations, and capacity planning.
  • Participate in IT service projects.
  • Participate in continuing education/training and complete certifications, as appropriate.
Ensure excellent customer service throughout Technology Services
  • Advocate for customers in service planning and deployment across the organization.
  • Coordinate with IT professionals at all levels to assist in service administration and implementation.
  • Provide end-user instruction and knowledgebase articles.
  • Resolve customer satisfaction issues.
Required Qualifications
Two years of progressively responsible work experience in an IT-related profession. College coursework which included IT or closely related discipline may substitute for experience as follows:
  • 60 semester hours of or an Associate's degree may substitute for one year of experience.
  • 90 semester hours or a Bachelor's degree may substitute for two years.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience as an administrator or other support role for one or more of the following services: system and server configuration management, system monitoring, system inventory management, system backups, and system security & compliance.
  • ITIL 3 Foundation or ITIL 4 Foundation certification.
Physical Demands
Position may involve lifting computer equipment up to 50 lbs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of service life cycle management processes including but not limited to incident management, change management, root cause analysis, monitoring, and testing.
  • Proven creative problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability in effective communication and collaborating in a high-performance team environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to customer service.
  • Demonstrated ability developing scripts to automate processes.
  • Ability to create and maintain appropriate service management documentation.
  • Ability to use good judgment and work with limited supervision.
  • Ability to effectively use and contribute to online resources, user forums, and knowledge bases in support of service.
  • Ability to effectively use and contribute to version control systems.
  • Familiarity with existing IT services and solutions in support of research and/or teaching and learning.
  • Familiarity with cloud service providers, either IaaS or PaaS models.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure as code models and tools.
  • Knowledge of networking and distributed environment concepts including client-server communications and clustering.

Appointment Information


This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5031 - Information Technology Technical Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 2/6/2023. The salary range begins at $65,000 with final amount commensurate with experience.
