Primary Position Summary:

The Lead Clinical Nurse is responsible for:


  • Coordinating the total scope of care for a group of patients throughout their unit stay to achieve clinical, financial, and organizational outcomes.

  • Providing evidence-based care based on the nursing process, policies, procedures, and protocols of the Johns Hopkins Hospital.

  • Mentoring and managing others to promote quality, safety, and excellence in care.

  • Working collaboratively with, and provides leadership for, a multidisciplinary health care team to optimize team performance.

  • Promoting and identifying quality improvement initiatives (clinical, financial, operational) that are aligned with departmental and organizational safety and operational objectives.

  • Identifying methods to promote the cost-effective use of resources.

  • Completing all identified competencies and annual requirements for patient population, unit, department, and institution.

  • Assuming unit management functions as identified by the Assistant Manager/Manager.

  • Consistently demonstrates organization's core values.

Competencies:

A. Education:

Baccalaureate degree in Nursing from an accredited School of Nursing.

B. Knowledge:

Knowledge of nursing process; social, behavioral, biological, and physical sciences; safety and scientific inquiry process and application to the skill performance; leadership and management as normally acquired through completion of a bachelor's program in nursing.

Knowledge of current health care environment.

C. Skills:

Must be competent in the ability to analyze and interpret physician orders, perform and communicate outcomes of treatment to the health care team members. Demonstrates organizational skills that allow the individual to map out and provide clinical care within their area of responsibility. Effective written and verbal communication, and interpersonal skills to establish working relationships that foster optimal quality patient care. Ability to apply principles of evidence-based practice and service excellence in practice. In age-specific populations, must be familiar with particular patient populations to which they are assigned.

D. Required Licensure, Certification, Etc.:

Registered Nurse (RN) Required. Maryland State or Compact License Required.

BLS certification provided by AHA, American Red Cross, or Military Training Network.

All credentials must be maintained with active status.

E. Work Experience:

Lead Clinical Nurse - The ideal candidate possesses at least three years' experience as a Registered Nurse, and is proficient in Registered Nurse 1, 2, & 3 competencies.

F. Machines, Tools, Equipment:

Must be competent in general physiologic monitoring and patient care equipment such as defibrillator and glucometer, and computer equipment and systems.

Dimensions:

A. Budget Responsibility:

Requires knowledge of routine budget report; conducts basic cost analysis; recommends and implements resource utilization.

B. Authority/Decision Making Level:

Makes decisions regarding the work process based on established guidelines. Assists in the development and implementation of procedures for the unit. Prioritizes and organizes own work and the work of others to meet unit demands. Provides clinical oversight for the nursing team and patient assignments.

C. Supervisory Responsibility:

In addition to RN 1 - 3 duties, provides guidance and direction to staff. Acts in the absence of the Assistant Nurse Manager/Nurse Manager to oversee a clinical team during care delivery and unit operations.

As delegated by the Assistant Manager/Manager, implements counseling, discipline, and performance management of all clinical staff.

Problem Solving:

Synthesizes patient data and knows when to consult for appropriate resources to initiate the plan. Takes ownership to address problems as they occur and communicates unresolved issues to appropriate personnel. Makes sound and timely clinical decisions in routine situations and seeks guidance appropriately. Activates resources to utilize the appropriate Service Recovery methods in order to acknowledge and respond to unmet expectations of patients and other customers. Manages time effectively and activates resources wisely in a manner that reflects fiscal awareness and responsibility. Understands and uses principles of conflict resolution.

Manages an evolving clinical picture; identifies impending changes in patient condition; identifies and analyzes individual and system issues and develops and recommends corrective action; understands and uses principles of negotiation.
