The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in The Grainger College of Engineering seeks applicants for a Laboratory Mechanic position. Under the direction of a supervisor, this position is responsible for performing work at the Journeyman skill level in the fabrication, operation, maintenance, and repair of diverse lab equipment and machine tools.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Operate basic machine tools with a journeyman degree of skill, including set- ups for basic machine operations, fixturing, and special needs of the work.

• Work from clear sketches or detailed drawings, make prints when necessary, and complete necessary calculations involving mathematics.

• Perform work of loose-to-medium tolerances in machine parts with extremely fine surface finishes.

• Perform welding, brazing, and hard and soft soldering techniques, proficient welding skills for UHV and other vacuum system applications.

• Machine effectively many specialty metals and non-metals used in lab apparatus and components.

• Perform work at a journeyman skill level developing the project and in making, fitting, and assembling components of laboratory equipment.

• Instruct or assist students or staff in proper use of tools and machinery, as needed.

• Maintain daily work time records for project billing purposes.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Any combination totaling four (4) years (48 months) from the categories below:
    1. Successful completion of a machinist apprentice (or a closely related program) in an approved training program or in a training program established by an employer served by the State Universities Civil Service System.
    2. Work experience comparable to that performed at the Assistant Laboratory Mechanic level of this series or in other positions of comparable responsibility.
    3. Coursework in welding, electrical/electronics, HVAC, industrial technology machining or manufacturing or a closely related field, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
      • 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
      • 60 semester hours (or an Associate's degree) equals two (2) years (24 months)


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• At the level of journeyman skills to meet the technical needs of projects.

• Proficient knowledge of geometry, trigonometry, and generally strong math skills.

• General knowledge of machine tool operation in a research environment.

• A strong background in reading blueprints and computer operation.

• Experience with TIG, MIG, welding for UHV, and CNC machine programming.

• Effective problem solving skills in a design aspect, skill level may vary from job to job.

• Proficient welding skills.

• Proficient with conventional lathes and mills.

• Proficient CNC programming and operation skills.

• Experience with CAD/CAM for creation of CNC programs

• Proficient soldering technique in a wide range of applications.

• Manage time efficiently.

• Ability to work one-on-one with faculty and students to help develop and design what is required to complete the project.

• Ability to work with varying project types from simple or routine to one-of-a-kind items for a very specialized need in ECE's technologically advanced research and teaching laboratories.

• Excellent interpersonal skills.

• Adherence to all safety protocols in the Shop.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

This is a full-time Civil Service Laboratory Mechanic position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. This is a bargained position and as such, the salary is driven by the collective bargaining agreement. The entry-level salary for the Laboratory Mechanic classification is $36.82/hr. Employees hired into this position will be expected to work onsite on a full-time basis. W ork authorization is not available for this position.
