Under the general supervision of the Nurse Manager, Blood Donor Services, the Lead Apheresis Technician provides leadership, training and daily supervision of the donor center staff to ensure the team functions as a cohesive unit. Provides support to nurse manager and nursing staff on special projects. Assists in developing and updating SOP's as well as training all staff on changes in SOP's. In the absence of a nurse, may assume charge responsibility as appropriate. Performs manual and automated blood collection procedures. Ensures the safety of the donor and the safety of the blood collected. Proven excellent customer service skills. Ability to work independently and serve as resource for donor center staff. Balances production, donor care and quality requirements to meet annual blood collection goals.

Performs any or all facets of the Donor Center donor processes, as needed and as training progresses:

• Coordinates training/trains of staff in all areas.

• Assesses trainee performance and competencies and provides nurse manager with trainee evaluations on a regular basis.

• Approves training completion and provides nurse manager with completed training packet.

• Maintains staff competency records.

• Assesses collection staff's skills through direct observation, testing and demonstration.

• In conjunction with nursing staff, performs competency reviews as assigned by nurse manager.

• Communicates any staff re-training needs to the nurse manager along with a re-training plan.

• In conjunction with the nurse manager, follows up with staff regarding errors, non-compliance and/complaints and provides the necessary coaching

and/or re-training or other action.

• Assists as needed with ensuring that all staff are up to date in completing departmental/hospital trainings.

• Participates in the development of training tools.

• Performs all duties and tasks related to the collection and processing of whole blood, platelet and double red cell donors.

• Performs all duties and tasks related to blood component processing.

• In conjunction with staff scheduler and nurse manager, coordinates and/or revises daily staff assignments.

  • In conjunction with management team, uses knowledge and judgment to manage problems and difficult situations.
• Consults and collaborates with marketing specialists and nurses regarding automated collections issues and scheduling.

• Reviews and calculates the RBC and plasma loss in apheresis donors. Maintains accurate apheresis records.

• Troubleshoots problems with apheresis machines and with the direction of the nursing team, coordinates repairs.

• Efficiently and accurately performs donation entries at intervals throughout the day.
  • Accurately and legibly records results of all procedures performed.
  • Performs appropriate Quality Control and preventive maintenance procedures, understands Current Good Manufacturing Practices.
• Utilizes resources efficiently to facilitate optimal donor care. Assists in the management of supplies and equipment.
  • Regularly works in all areas to maintain competency, skills, relations with staff and to assist with busy operations or to replace staff on short notice when needed.
  • Maintains complete confidentiality of patient and donor information and records, as outlined by the MGH Privacy/Confidentiality/HIPPA policies.
  • Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills through various means such as webinars, internal or external trainings, seminars, etc.
  • Applies knowledge and shares the information with others as appropriate
  • Knows and adheres to safety precaution techniques.
  • Exhibits professionalism in dress, grooming and maintains prompt and regular attendance.
  • Works a variable schedule which may include early start times, later end times, weekends and various length shifts.
  • Follows departmental reporting lines when needing to escalate an issue or employee, donor or department concerns and /or assignments.


Qualifications
  • Must have a High School degree or a GED
  • Some college or Associate's degree preferred
  • Must have at least 3 years of previous work in a blood donor center including apheresis procedures and preceptor experience in the collection of blood products.
  • National phlebotomy certification is required
  • Experience being in a lead role preferred. Proficiency in a second language is desired.
  • Oversees the day to day activities and provides guidance to of up to 10 employees including staff in training.
  • In the absence of a nurse, may act as the charge person in the donor center or on the bloodmobile.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and competence in whole blood and automated apheresis collections and the ability to teach those skills to adult learners.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Possess an understanding of and respect for following SOP's and industry requirements and ability to instill same in collection staff.
  • Ability to demonstrate respect and professionalism in all interactions.
  • Excellent verbal skills to successfully communicate with and motivate donor center staff.
  • Superior customer service skills.
  • Instills confidence in others.
  • Proficiency with computers including email, data entry, and good keyboarding skills.
  • Attention to detail for accurate donor data entry into computer.
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Must read, write and comprehend English fluently in order to follow procedures and to communicate with donors, laboratory and hospital staff.
  • Demonstrates reliability and consistency

  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse population,
  • Flexibility to meet workload demands and operational need
  • Blood donor center and component preparation lab located within the MGH main campus and on bloodmobiles.
  • Component processing laboratory environment, requiring physically loading and unloading centrifuges, separating, weighing, evaluating the quality of the blood products, data entry of all blood and components.
  • Work a variable schedule which may include early start times, later end times, weekends and various length shifts.
  • Requires lifting objects weighing no more than 25 lbs and pushing/pulling loaded supply cart.
  • Requires sitting and standing for 1-2 hours
