This position is hybrid remote in Lansing, MI.

Primarily responsible for providing support functions for Government Affairs. Responsibilities include the identification/organization of national legislative risks and opportunities, conducting legislative and environmental analysis, trade administration and process analysis. Support relationship management and exchange information with affiliated trade associations and contracted lobby firms. Support management in the development and implementation of legislative strategy. With oversight, participate in department planning, coordination and maintenance of Enterprise political action committee (bluesPAC) efforts.

RESPONSIBILITIES/TASKS:

  • Conduct annual Government Affairs environmental analysis in priority markets
  • Support administration of political action committee, annual plan and process
  • Monitor and organize priority market legislative and regulatory introductions
  • Review regulatory and legislative initiatives to support corporate analysis and impact documentation
  • Stay current on government affairs best practices and industry standards
  • Conduct legislative research and process documentation
  • Initiate appropriate legislative review processes and monitoring tools and ensure follow up/action
  • Support relationships with external industry trade partners and contracted lobby firms
  • Document and maintain processes, procedures and documentation as it pertains to Government Affairs
  • Support Director Government Affairs on priority government initiatives
  • Supply administrative support to Government Affairs on industry political task forces and committees
  • Research and document analysis on legislative priority initiatives and issues as they arise
  • Escalate priority initiatives to Director Government Affairs
  • Support in Government Affairs communication development
  • Operate as change champion through education and support influencing positive outcomes
  • Participate in continued insurance learning and professional development programs

EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

Bachelor's degree in insurance, political science, communication or related field. Combinations of relevant education and experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

EXPERIENCE:

Two to four years experience in insurance industry and/or business experience which provides the necessary skills, knowledge and abilities is highly preferred.

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES (SKA) REQUIRED:
  • Ability to stay current on Government Affairs industry tools and resources
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully function in a team environment
  • Ability to effectively exchange information clearly and concisely, and present ideas to impacted areas, report facts and other information, and respond to questions as appropriate
  • Ability to support, develop and implement action plans for legislative strategy
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to interact with others to build consensus to support Senior Government Affairs Specialist
  • Ability to operate with a sense of urgency and a strong understanding of escalated legislative issues
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet necessary deadlines
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to perform other assignments at locations outside the office
  • Understanding of legislative process and procedures
  • Ability to interact with leadership as well as subject matter experts in order to initiate alignment on priority market legislative initiatives and departmental strategies
  • Ability to work in Microsoft Office: PowerPoint, Excel and Word
WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed in an office setting with no unusual hazards. Minimal travel is required.
