General Summary/Overview Statement

Performs routine installations, maintenance testing, and repairs to piping systems and related equipment. Develops costing estimates to support a "Fee for Service" or cost pay back special project program and supports construction and renovation projects.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Installs, maintains, repairs and tests piping systems for water, gas vacuum, oxygen, sanitary systems, medical air, sewerage, pumps, and all related devices throughout the hospital.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints (piping drawings) for various information such as piping size and locations.
  • Prepares material listing as required for work order requests and other routinely assigned task.
  • Communicates with other employees and management on necessary information regarding piping systems.
  • Carries out activities in compliance with appropriate plumbing codes.
  • Works on Acid Waste Systems to ensure efficiency and compliance with standards.
  • Maintains records of all plumbing systems in accordance with department standards.
  • Meets with representative of requester department to assess and prepare estimates for reconstruction, renovation, and/or modernization type projects.
  • Function as lead worker in multiple person project crews. As such, assumes responsibility for team member task assignment, work quality, and timely completion of project.
  • Participates in educational programs to meet performance expectations.
  • Attends and actively participates in department, team and one on one meetings with supervisor.
  • Provides updates in shift huddles with team members to ensure continuity of services across shifts.
  • Maintains a safe and clean work environment in areas where work is performed and in Engineering department.
  • Closes work order in Maximo to maintain an accurate record of services provided.
  • Completes work in accordance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Supports team members to problem solve and complete work orders to meet customer needs.
  • Upholds BWH values and customer service standards in all interactions within and outside of the Engineering Department.
  • Responds to Code Red calls.
  • Responds to all emergency plumbing situations as required.
  • May be required to carry the on-call pager.
  • May be required to work weekends or rotating shifts.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Qualifications
    Qualifications

  • Licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a plumber or steamfitter required.


  • Requires a minimum of three or more years of experience as a licensed plumber.


  • Must be able to read, write, and perform arithmetic calculations at a level generally acquired through a high school education.


  • Skills and Abilities Required

  • Strong interpersonal skills to interact effectively and to cooperate with staff throughout the hospital. Must be able to clearly explain plumbing issues to other personnel.


  • Analytical skills to evaluate piping systems and develop appropriate solutions to plumbing problems.


  • Knowledge of plumbing supplies and equipment and the ability to read blueprints and piping diagrams.


  • Ability to work independently.


  • Working Conditions

  • May occasionally (less than 15% of the time) get involved in a dirty or hazardous environment in the performance of his/her duties.


  • May be required to work within a containment and/or the containment booth.


  • May be required to work with a respirator.


  • Requires physical ability to lift over 30 lbs. (less than 15% of the time).
