Manager of Group UnderwritingPosition can be located in any of the four Cambia states - WA, OR, ID or UT

The Manager of Group Underwriting will be over merit sized groups. The manager plans, develops and directs risk assessment activities of the assigned group underwriting department to meet corporate objectives of risk management.

Responsibilities:

  • Supports development and maintenance of underwriting systems such as RUS, MedPLUS, shared drives, renewal templates, etc.
  • Directs development and implementation of policies and procedures in compliance with corporate strategies and legislative mandates.
  • Analyzes rating/risk methodologies and their effect on the market and corporate objectives.
  • Assists the marketing division in attainment of enrollment goals.
  • Directs the activities of the department ensuring proper administration of Underwriting procedures and regulations, ensuring rates, retention levels, funding arrangements and financial settlements for groups are appropriately developed, ensuring continued growth, and maintaining the desired profitability and administrative cost coverage for the department.
  • Explains the Corporation's position involving benefits, eligibility requirements and underwriting regulations.
  • Provides leadership and direction for corporate level planning of new product development leading or participating in the implementation of new products in order to make them available to group or non-group markets.
  • Analyze and evaluate risk in relation to rating of both new and prospective groups including a strong knowledge of the impact of medical conditions.
  • Assist in the development of the annual budget.
  • Direct the timely and accurate preparation of all relevant statistics ensuring accurate and correct information is provided to Senior Management.
  • Ensures the coordination of workflow and activities with other functional areas.
  • Ensures consistent administration of policies and procedures including verifying the accurate and correct use of Underwriting policies and formulas.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of the health care industry; including underwriting principles, administration, provider, market and legislative requirements.
  • Comfortable working with complex computer software systems.
  • Ability to read the marketplace with regards to rate sensitivity.
  • Ability to think analytically, apply analytical techniques and to provide in-depth analysis and recommendations using critical thinking and sound judgment.
  • Ability to apply and interpret quantitative data for decision-making.
  • Ability to explain complex mathematical and abstract concepts to lay personnel.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with all levels of the work force.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with executives, managers, supervisors, market representatives, and regulators.
Normally to be proficient in the competencies listed above

The Manager of Group Underwriting would have a Bachelor's degree in business, math, statistics or related discipline and 5 years of underwriting experience in the health insurance profession or equivalent combination of education or experience.

Work Environment
  • Work primarily performed in office environment; some remote work may be acceptable.
  • Travel may be required, locally or out of state.
  • May be required to work outside normal hours.
