Responsibilities

What do our Managers, Payroll do?

Manager, Payroll is responsible for ensuring timely and accurate processing of payroll activities, specializing in specific state law and regulatory requirements. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Payroll, you will lead a team of payroll processors and perform duties that require an understanding of company payroll policies and procedures, including state regulatory requirements. This role will be responsible for building relationships with the Operations leadership team and creating a straight line of communication to the field. This position will collaborate with the HR Field team on cross-functional projects. The Payroll Manager is a strong subject matter expert and will oversee and lead processing of US payroll and able to represent Payroll team in joint initiatives with cross functional departments This position will drive payroll audits and controls on data and system maintenance, including, but not limited to new hire set up, tax forms processing, local taxes, terminations with specific attention to state requirements. Provide knowledge and guidance, and oversee the day-to-day activities of payroll processors, and operate as an escalation point to resolve issues

Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:

  • Manages at least 2 full time exempt direct reports. Management responsibilities include, but are not limited to hiring, coaching, skills development, recognition and rewards, staff productivity and performance management to include disciplinary actions up to and including termination.
  • Create trusted relationships with operators to include, but not limited to, coaching leaders on best practices and payroll laws, responding swiftly to colleague concerns and developing processes that are easily executed.
  • Partner with COE's and field Human Resources team for ongoing understanding of operator concerns and to ensure transparency in problem solving.
  • Demonstrate an ongoing commitment to change management and partnership between the business and the payroll support team.
  • Responsible for the oversight of multiple payroll processors located across North America.
  • Specific expertise leading payroll in California or New York
  • Oversees the payroll function and all related payroll programs to ensure accurate and timely processing of payroll. Maintains compliance with labor law and government regulations related to payroll reporting, taxation, and garnishments. Compliant with 401(k) regulations. Ensure accurate and timely review of personnel records, payroll deductions, and payroll processes.
  • Ensure established payroll related workflow, policies, procedures, and regulations are followed and maintained. Prepare various management and government reports to include tax reconciliations, balancing and controlling earnings and deduction totals, calculating, preparing, and posting general ledger entries. Inspecting automated system output such as registers and standard reports, determining and correcting out-of-balance conditions.
  • Identify areas of risk and create resolutions to remediate; this includes items identified during internal and external audits.
  • Creates a responsive and proactive team that provides timely support to the business
  • Develop and manage SOX audit processes.
  • Manages the responsibility of payroll tax recording and reporting with third party administrators.
  • Collaborate with internal auditors to ensure department operation procedures comply with financial policies and internal controls.
  • Monitors changing legal environment, communicates applicable changes to colleagues, provides guidance on the same to senior management
What do you need?

  • Bachelor's degree required; degree in Human Resources or business-related field preferred. Master's degree preferred
  • At least 5 or more years leading a payroll functions, with at least 3 years in California or New York based on where the position is required
  • Must hold current CPP certification
  • At least 3 or more years proven track record of building a skilled, certified and responsive payroll team
  • A minimum of 6+ years experience in a Payroll function or related field; experience across multiple areas, including in-depth experience in payroll processing and leading payroll initiatives that drive compliance.
  • Strong leadership and prioritization skills and at least 3+ years of management experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrable experience in Payroll for US and Canada and specific payroll management in California or New York based on position location.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with ability to operate and influence cross-functionally at all levels
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving orientation with enthusiasm for digging into and solving cross-functional business, operational and organizational issues
  • Excellent listening skills
  • Position must reside in California or New York
  • Successfully meet pre-employment background screen
