The Department of Bioengineering in The Grainger College of Engineering seeks applicants for a Marketing and Communications Coordinator position. Reporting to the Associate Director of Operations, the Marketing and Communications Coordinator manages all marketing and communications efforts for the Department of Bioengineering. In line with college brand strategy, this position will develop, manage, and promote both the departmental excellence and sense of community, which includes implementing a strong communications plan (presence at conferences, creation of promotional materials and departmental annual report, E-news, Weekly Digest, etc.) to enhance the programs and mission of the department.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Communications and Marketing

• Write and edit scientific and non-scientific content in the form of news articles, press releases and digital and social media that promote the department's faculty, students, alumni and programs. Conduct research and interviews to facilitate content development.

• Manage the department website to ensure that content remains current, appealing and accurate. Develop new features that enhance communication with various audiences. Implement search engine optimization (SEO) in accordance with industry best practices and college marketing strategies.

• Review submissions and create content for the weekly email digest, monthly growth factors newsletter, digital displays and presentations. Work with appropriate personnel from marcom, IT, advancement and/or the University of Illinois Foundation to distribute content.

• Develop department publicity and outreach material such as fact sheets and brochures to support recruitment efforts of undergraduate, graduate, and certificate programs, in line with college brand strategy and marketing programs.

• Create the annual report in digital and print formats. Develop or source the content and images, design the layout, coordinate with stakeholders, work with the printer and manage the distribution in conjunction with the University of Illinois Foundation.

• Manage the department's presence at the annual Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) conference. This includes booth reservation, selection and layout as well as planning for booth staffing and collateral materials.

• Develop and sustain consistent departmental presence on appropriate social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and LinkedIn) to actively engage key stakeholders. Complement and work with both college and campus-wide social media efforts to leverage impact of posts.

• Manage the online store to offer department-branded merchandise.

Advancement and Corporate Relations

• Serve as the department liaison with the college advancement and corporate relations offices. Provide materials for donor and corporate outreach and work collaboratively in the identification, cultivation and acknowledgement of donors and corporate partners.

• In collaboration with the college advancement office, advance interactions with department alumni, write stories featuring alumni for various venues, and maintain Linkedln and other connections to update alumni records.

Awards

• Write award nominations of department faculty, staff, alumni and students for various awards (College, Campus, State, National, International awards).

• Oversee and organize awards events with the assistance of department staff.

• Maintain a database of internal and external faculty and student awards, with deadlines, potential nominees, and those nominated earlier, past winners, past nominators, etc.

Other Duties

• Represent the department on various committees and at relevant meetings.

• Hire and supervise students and/or consultants for design, photography or other services as needed.

• Travel occasionally for conference and other special event purposes.

• Assume additional duties to further the mission of the department.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in marketing, business administration, communications, public relations, or a closely related field

• Three (3) years (36 months) of professional work experience in marketing, public relations, communications, brand management, or a related professional area.

• Experience in professional writing.

• Experience working in social media, including the ability to tell a story that appeals to different audiences.

• Experience with web content strategy.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Proven ability to craft effective communication in written and verbal formats to a variety of audiences.

• Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite.

• Evidence of strong interpersonal and project management skills.

• Proven ability to manage multiple projects.

• Attention to detail is a must.

• Proven ability to work, research, and brainstorm ideas independently.

• Knowledge of the university communications structure and ability to develop relationships and share Information with colleagues at campus Public Affairs and News Bureau, Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, Grainger College of Engineering, Carle Illinois College of Medicine, Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology, Holonyak Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory, and other units on campus.

• Knowledge and understanding of the biomedical engineering and medical fields, particularly basic research, including the ability to review a faculty research article and write an engaging press release for the mass media and general audiences.

• Ability to work an adjusted work schedule and/or work outside of the normal work hours for special events.

• Ability to travel occasionally to conferences and other special events.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

This is a full-time Civil Service Marketing Associate position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. Applicants may be interviewed before the closing date; however, no hiring decision will be made until after that date. The minimum salary is $55,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Employees hired into this position will be expected to work onsite on a full-time basis with the possibility of hybrid work options available. Work authorization is not available for this position. This position may require occasional travel to conferences and other special events, and may require an adjusted work schedule and/or work outside of the normal work hours for special events.
