Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is seeking is seeking an experienced Mechanical / Plumbing Designer (HVAC, Piping, Plumbing) to join our San Antonio, TX office and responsible for assisting mechanical engineering designs for repairs and upgrades of existing facilities, and new facility construction. Individually will work independently or as a member of a design team, including drawings and plans and significant CADD work. The successful candidate should have a minimum of 5+ years' experience in one or more of the following: mechanical, piping and plumbing.

Key Responsibilities

  • The individual will work with a multidisciplinary team of engineers, and designers on building design projects with an emphasis on engineering design and plan production - Projects include building design for restoration, renovations and new construction
  • Works under the supervision of a Senior Engineer
  • Support mechanical HVAC, Piping and Plumbing system drawing development, projects, and clients with accurate drafting and design.
  • Secondary support to other design team members
  • Develop schematics, plan drawings, elevation views, section views, and installation details
  • Convey results and findings by means of oral discussions, graphic-based presentations and project documentation
  • Design or redesign complex layouts and drawings from general sketches, or written and verbal specifications from project team
  • Create exhibits and documents for presentations and reports
  • Work with project team to investigate and resolve problems with existing designs and make corrections to drawings as requested by the senior staff
  • Create and update database of design records for reference and utilization on future projects.
  • Adhere to discipline-specific and client-specific CAD standards
  • Design requirements will include creating standards, details, drawing templates, sheet sets, drawings and designs.
  • Executes facility designs in accordance with applicable codes and standards
  • Generates workload plans, design analyses, and drawing plans
  • Supports proposals generation
  • Significant CADD and Revit work

Required
  • Associate of Science (AS) degree in drafting/CAD technology, technical design or similar preferred
  • A minimum of 5+ years of experience preparing design drawings (using Autodesk AutoCAD and REVIT) related to construction plan development, including plan, profile, and detail views
  • Must have experience with REVIT and AutoCAD
  • Must have HVAC, piping and plumbing system design/drafting experience
  • Must understand pipe sizing calculations, routing principles, and space coordination requirements
  • Mathematic skills, including basic understanding and use of geometry and trigonometry
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Familiarity with Government codes related to utilities, HVAC, fire protection, domestic water plumbing
  • Familiarity with pipe sizing
  • Proficiency in MS Office
  • Ability to develop Bill of Materials
  • Proven ability to read, understand, and develop both 2D and 3D drawings


  • Generates design and detail drawings including General Arrangements, Isometrics and Pipe Support Details utilizing 3D modeling software
  • Able to conduct field verification of designs prior to, during, and after construction
  • Coordinate with multiple engineering disciplines, equipment vendors, and installation contractors
  • Able to help select system equipment and components when needed
  • Generates design and detail drawings including General Arrangements, Isometrics and Pipe Support Details utilizing 3D modeling software
  • Review drawings supplied by vendors
  • Proven ability to manage and execute multiple project activities
  • Proven experience in plan production and design for building design projects
  • Ability to be flexible in daily duties and level of responsibility encompassing redlining as well as leading plan production efforts
  • Strong organizational abilities
  • Demonstrated consistency and attention to detail
  • Flexibility to work outside of normal business hours, if required
  • Ability and willingness travel with the team to project sites; approximately 15% overnight travel.
  • Has the ability to get US Passport
  • Must pass drug test, background check, and must have a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the Company's driving (MVR) policy

Preferred
  • Pertinent engineering design production experience
  • Expertise through past experience in developing construction plans, specifications, cost estimates and schedules
  • Other design experience (i.e. electrical systems, medical gas system) experience is a plus.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of advanced principles and techniques of plumbing engineering and knowledge of competing and alternative design techniques.
  • Identifies work improvement opportunities
  • Knowledge of Unified Facility Criteria

Physical Requirements
  • Able to do physically demanding field work such as climbing ladders, and carrying back packs with notes and data collecting equipment, etc.
  • Must be able to travel without limitations and perform unimpeded standing and walking in field environments for up to 8 hours per workday
