The Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center has a great opportunity for a Medical Assistant 1. The Medical Assistant 1 assists in the examination and treatment of patients, under the direction of a physician. Moreover, the incumbent interviews patients, measures vital signs, and records information on patients' charts. The Medical Assistant 1 also draws and collects blood samples from patients and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis.

Department Specific Functions

• Clinical Duties (may include, but not limited to): Taking medical histories; Preparing patients for examination; Assisting the physician during exams and certain procedures; Collecting and preparing laboratory specimens; Performing basic laboratory tests; Drawing blood; Taking electrocardiograms, spirometry and other tests; May perform other advanced clinical duties under direction and supervision of a nurse or a physician, as needed based on assigned unit.
• Clerical Duties (may include, but not limited to): Assist patients who call the office with post-visit questions or concerns; Obtain authorization for ancillary and/or surgical procedures. Assist in scheduling appointments, diagnostic testing, and other procedures. Perform clinic check-in and check-out procedures including arriving appointment, collecting copay as needed.
• Ability to drive mobile clinic vehicle

Department Specific Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Associates Degree preferred

Certification and Licensing:

Certification by the American Association of Medical Assistants or credentialing as a Registered Medical Assistant by the American Society of Medical Technologies preferred.

American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification with at least 6 months validity required.

Occupational Hearing Conservationist Certification within 1 year.

NIOSH Spirometry Certification within 1 year.

Experience:

Minimum 1 year of relevant experience

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

• Gives injections and treatments and performs routine laboratory tests.
• Assists in patient care activities such as dressing changes and leg wraps.
• Prepares treatment room for examination of patient.
• Assists with physical examinations by preparing supplies and handing instruments and materials to the doctor as directed.
• Provides patients with basic instruction and information regarding examination procedures.
• Cleans and sterilizes medical instruments while observing principles of sterile technique.
• Schedules patients for tests and completes required forms for laboratory work.
• Maintains accurate and complete patient records and documentation.
• Orders, stocks, and inventories supplies, and assists in performing clerical duties.
• Escorts and transports patients to various hospital locations.
• Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent

Certification and Licensing:

Registered Certified Medical Assistant Certification Preferred. BLS and HIV certification required.

Experience:

Minimum 1 year of relevant experience
