Description

Semmes Murphey Clinic is committed to implementing a team-based approach to provide excellence in patient care. The Medical Coder will work with other members of Semmes Murphey Clinic to provide patient services and is expected to participate in the appropriate team activities with the objective of providing a high standard of patient and clinical service. The Medical Coder is responsible for using approved coding conventions to prepare patient visits and procedure for billing to insurance carriers and other responsible parties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Use ICD-10 and CPT-4 coding conventions to accurately code primary and secondary diagnoses and procedures for the patient's medical record; sequence diagnoses and procedures using coding guidelines; abstract and compile data from medical record for appropriate, optimal reimbursement
  • Review complex (problematic coding that needs research and reference checking) medical records and accurately code the primary/secondary diagnoses and procedures
  • Query physician when documentation is not straightforward or documentation in the record is inadequate, ambiguous or unclear for coding purposes; communicate with clinical and ancillary staff for needed documentation to ensure accurate coding
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, disease processes and surgical techniques through participation in continuing education to effectively apply ICD-10 and CPT-4 coding guidelines to outpatient diagnoses and procedures; research new technologies specific to specialty; review newsletters, bulletins and periodicals and attend workshops to stay abreast of changes in order to maintain standards of correct coding
  • Audit incomplete records and prepares reports on delinquencies
  • Monitor completion of medical records/charge posting in accordance with time standards
  • Assist with special projects, as required
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & CREDENTIALS

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • High school diploma or equivalent, and coding certification required (ICD-10, CPC, CCS-
  • Six (6) months to one (1) year of related experience and/or training as a coder
  • Coding certification (ICD-10, CPC, CCS-P or CCS)
PREFERRED

Experience working with neurology and neurosurgery codes

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Proficient computer skills to process, store and retrieve health information; knowledge of data
  • entry and coding software
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word), electronic medical records (EMR) and
  • medical practice software
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written; communicates effectively and professionally
  • with patients, visitors, physicians, and coworkers
  • Ability to comprehend and interpret verbal orders and direction
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Can work with focused concentration
  • Ability to make frequent judgments and respond to routine problems
  • High level of confidentiality and discretion
