The MedicalAssistant/Practice Assistant is an integral member of the healthcare team andis accountable for patient care as assigned by a licensed independent provider(LIC: MD, NP, PA), a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or a Registered Nurse (RN).The MA/PA participates in the direct and indirect care of patients, healthmaintenance, patient instruction, collaborative planning and rehabilitation aswithin scope of practice and consistent with his/her education and training.The MA/PA may be present in secure medication storage areas and is allowedincidental access to medications. Developing relationships with patients,families and colleagues, the MA functions as an interdisciplinary team memberwho provides quality patient care and contributes toward the attainment ofimportant goals for the patient, the practice and the organization.Additionally, as part of the regular job duties, the MA/PA will provideadministrative support to the practice responsible for multiple functions toensure a smooth and seamless patient experience.

Clinical Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Demonstratestrue engagement and enthusiasm to contribute toward the care delivery needs forpatients and families.
  • Promotesan inclusive environment supportive of patient and family centered care for adiverse community.
  • Acceptsassignments for patient care within the scope of his/her preparation and withincurrent standards of practice.
  • Inconjunction with a LIP, LPN or RN, participates in the gathering of data thatcontributes to the assessment, planning, and evaluation of care delivered.
  • Collaboratesas a member of the health care team, contributing toward a supportive andtherapeutic environment that promotes the attainment of patient goals that arespecific, measurable, action-oriented, realistic and timely.
  • Accuratelyobtains vital signs, elicits information about the patient's basic healthstatus, administers relevant care within scope of practice and as directed bythe LIP/LPN/RN, and documents as appropriate in the electronic health record.
  • Performsroutine tests that may include bur are not limited to: electrocardiograms,vision and hearing screening, and the collection of specimens for laboratorytesting and point of care (includes phlebotomy).
  • Participatesin team-based care and patient education initiatives to support the health andwellness of patients in conjunction with the LIP/LPN/RN. Reinforces patientinstruction as directed by LIP/LPN/RN.
  • Participatesin organizational quality improvement initiatives and compliance readiness.
  • Participatesin telephone screening of patients may provide instruction to patient whendirected by the LIP/LPN/RN.
  • Participatesin prescription management tasks including pending of new prescriptions andrenewals requiring LIP approval, prior authorizations and medication reconciliation.
  • Followingapproved clinical practice guidelines and workflows, sends appropriate ordersfor radiology, laboratory testing and other care needs requiring LIPauthorization.
  • PerformsNP swabs.
  • Coveringother sites as needed may be required.
Administrative Duties andResponsibilities:
  • Answerand transfer telephone calls.
  • Scheduleand register patients for appointments/procedures, confirmappointments/procedures, prepare for patient visit by providing patient withall necessary information and completing all necessary tasks.
  • Receivepatient at arrival, verify and obtain all necessary information, and ensureforms are completed.
  • Ensureall billing/fiscal information is completed and submitted after visit,including collection and daily reconciliation of any co-payments.
  • Assistwith special projects as directed.
  • Assistwith training and orienting staff as needed.
  • FollowHIPAA guidelines for the management of patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Appropriatelyutilizes organizational resources including management of time, supplies,equipment and other assets.
  • Completespaperwork when appropriate.
  • Abstractsclinical information such as colonoscopy, mammogram dates.
  • Otherduties as assigned.
  • Localtravel may be required.


Qualifications
High schooldiploma required

Graduate from anaccredited Medical Assistant Program

MicrosoftOffice Computer Skills with a focus on Word and Excel.

EPIC experiencepreferred

Must hold acurrent CPR Certification

Clinical skills:
  • Knowledgeof practice operations and standards.
  • Beginningto intermediate knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Abilityto accurately perform vital signs and obtain pertinent health informationincluding but not limited to; temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure,height, and weight.
  • Abilityto participate in the medication reconciliation processes and relatedprescription management tasks, including prior authorizations.
  • Knowledgeand ability to perform specific procedures and tests as appropriate to theclinical setting.
Communication skills:
  • Demonstrateseffective oral and written communication skills in English. Communicates in aprofessional, courteous, clear and concise manner. Facilitates therapeuticrelationships between patients, families and other members of the health careteam.
Writing skills:
  • Abilityto correspond and communicate with others clearly and effectively in writing(via e-mail, memo or interoffice note, documentation of patient information)and to take complete and accurate messages.
Phone skills:
  • Abilityto telephonically support the practice by answering and screening calls,offering information within scope of practice to facilitate communication.
Organization skills:
  • Abilityto manage work processes in a neat and systematic way. Ability to managemultiple tasks effectively, appropriately prioritize clinical work, followestablished policies, procedures and clinical practice guidelines, workflows.
Technology skills:
  • Demonstratesability to utilize technology in the clinical setting. Includes basic computerskills as well as the utilization of electronic medical equipment. Ability totype accurately and enter data at an intermediate level. Ability to become proficientin nursing the HER and other appropriate applications.
  • Abilityto use hand-held technology and download related data to the electronic healthrecord.
