Position Title: SHIFT LEADER - Milling

Business Unit: Wood & Laminate Department: Milling

Primary Objective: Under direction of the department supervisor, operates equipment and verifies the correct material is used in production for each product. In the assigned area, provides work guidance and training to assistant operators and lift truck drivers. Performs duties under moderate supervision following standard procedures and processing guidelines.

Major Function and Scope:

  • Ensures compliance with all company safety rules and procedures.
  • Directs and coordinates the activities of all shift employees engaged in production process; participates in employee selection and performance reviews.
  • Delegates and follows up on work schedules, assignments, and production sequences, to meet production goals.
  • Confers with management or subordinates to resolve worker problems, complaints, or issues.
  • Confers with other supervisors to coordinate operations and activities within departments or between departments.
  • Confers with management and engineering to best maximize production and output.
  • Works with the production team in assigned department to best maximize department production and output.
  • Reads and analyzes charts, work orders, or production schedules to determine production requirements.
  • Uses information systems (Shop Floor Control, Locus, Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.) to maintain operations data including production and prepares shift reports as required by management
  • Fills in for operators and team members as needed; ensures all shifts are covered and helps to plan ahead for known staffing gaps.
  • Recommends measures to motivate employees and improve production methods, equipment performance, product quality, or efficiency.
  • Requisitions materials, supplies, or repair services.
  • Inspects materials, products, or equipment to detect defects or malfunctions.
  • Demonstrates equipment operations or work procedures to new employees or assigns new employees to experienced workers for training.
  • Maintains certification for and serves as first responder on site during shift.
  • Monitors or patrols work area and enforces safety and housekeeping policies.
  • Assists in training new employees as needed.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by management.
Type of Experience and Knowledge:

Knowledge, Experience, Certifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency required.
  • One year of related experience and/or training.
  • 1-3 years of supervisory experience
  • 3+ years of automated manufacturing experience
  • 1+ years of experience operating a forklift
Competencies:
  • Good math skills, including the knowledge of arithmetic and its applications
  • Excellent time management skills, adequately managing one's own time and the time of others within the department
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with all levels of the organization, and the ability to motivate, develop and direct subordinates
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Good computer skills
Physical Requirements / Other Pertinent Job Information: (Such as: American with Disabilities Act- ADA requirements for certain hourly positions).
  • This position requires the team member to work with machinery in an environment where there may be regular exposure to chemicals, noise from machinery, dust, and variable temperatures.
  • Other working conditions may include working long hours and flexible shifts, including holidays
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs.; bending, squatting, climbing ladders and stairs are required
