DLBA Naval Architects, formerly Donald L. Blount and Associates, a Division of Gibbs & Cox Maritime Solutions Gibbs & Cox, a wholly owned subsidiary of Leidos. DLBA is a naval architecture and marine engineering firm which provides consulting services for the design and construction management of a variety of boats: motor yachts such as Alamshar and Foners (formerly Fortuna) commissioned by foreign nobility, fiberglass recreational boats like Mastercraft's Aviara series, and aluminum workboats like Kayak Express. We specialize in high-performance marine craft design and engineering yet support all types of vessels and clients from record-setting high-speed race boats to commercial marine tugs and barges like Capt Bud.

We are looking for a Naval Architect I to join our organization

Location: Chesapeake, VA

We are seeking an engaged and talented Naval Architect I for our Chesapeake, VA operations to support the development of steel, aluminum, and composite recreational vessels, commercial ship designs, and U.S. Government platforms from 20' to 250' feet in length.

As a member of a multidisciplinary team, you will provide naval architecture support in the development of steel, aluminum, and composite (a) recreational vessels, (b) commercial ship designs, and (c) U.S. Government programs from 20' to 250' feet in length.

Essential responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Independently evaluates, selects, and applies standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria for design and modification of boats and craft. Is working toward becoming a fully competent engineer in all conventional aspects of marine vessel design (resistance and powering, stability evaluation, structural design, seakeeping predictions). Work may require a broad knowledge of precedents in naval architecture and an in-depth knowledge of principles and practices of related technologies. Works independently and/or as a team member to develop complete design definition.

Position Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship is required, and candidates must be able to obtain a security clearance
  • BS degree or higher in Naval Architecture
  • 1-5 years of related experience
  • Ability to work independently or as a team member
  • Excellent MS Office skills, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Experience in using GHS hydrostatics and stability software
  • Experience with hull structural design standards such as DNV HSLC, ABS HSC, and ISO rules.
  • Proficiency in using industry-standard CAD software, including AutoCAD and Rhino
  • Strong analytical skills, communication, and interpersonal skills
