About the Position:

Provide advanced engineering and support services to the campus data network environment. Provide advanced engineering and support services to an environment consisting of network switches, routers, wireless (802.11), IP address management, DNS, DHCP, VPN, OSPF, BGP,logging, and NAC technology solutions.

Develop, implement and maintain departmental policies, standards, and procedures for the data network environment. Provide detailed project planning, technical network design, network diagrams and detailed network documentation supporting SMU data network infrastructure initiatives. Liaise with and provide training and support to help desk, network, security and other campus departments on network issues. Advanced diagnosis and resolution of network system (hardware and software) problems. Advanced configuration of routers, switches (layer 2 & 3), and other network devices. Evaluation of new network technologies and provide vendor recommendations. Will work in a small team environment with OIT, but will have significant interaction with other University Departments.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide advanced engineering and support services to the campus data network environment in an environment consisting of network switches, routers, wireless (802.11), DataCenters, OSPF, BGP, DNS, DHCP, VPN, logging, and NAC technology solutions.
  • Provide advanced diagnosis and resolution of network system (hardware and software) issues. Proactively working to identify and resolve issues within the infrastructure to reduce downtime. Working with colleagues to troubleshoot issues while fostering an environment that allows for varied opinions, investigation into new processes, and improvement feedback to services being provided.
  • Perform advanced configuration of routers, switches (layer 2 & 3), and other network devices. Support automation through scripting such as Python. Be part of an on-call rotation.
  • Liaise with and provide training and support to help desk, network, security and other campus departments on network issues. Be the technical liaison between SMU and the Lonestar Education and Research Network (LEARN).
  • Provide detailed project planning, technical network design, network diagrams and detailed network documentation supporting SMU data network infrastructure initiatives. Proactively identify areas of improvement within the network infrastructure, develop plans detailing how to improve, and upon approval implement the necessary plans.
  • Develop, implement and maintain departmental practices, standards, and procedures for the data network environment.
  • Perform evaluation of new network technologies and provide vendor recommendations. Work directly with campus constituents to identify solutions to networking related challenges. Interact and negotiate with vendors, outsourcers and contractors for product evaluations, technical implementation planning, and procuring data networking-specific products and services.


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's is required. Preferably degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent work experience.

A minimum of (5) years of working with complex network environments. Candidate with experience with LAN, wireless, switch/router config, network diagnostic tools, IP Address management, BGP, OSPF,DNS, DHCP, NAC is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate with LAN, Wireless tech, switch/router config and network diagnostic experience is required. Experience with Aruba, HP, Cisco, Bluecat, Bradford and network management is preferred. Working knowledge of datacenter architecture, Amazon/Azure cloud configuration and design is preferred. Candidate with proficiency in Microsoft suite for presentations, calendar, documentation etc. is required. Experience with networking monitoring tools and applications are required.

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University and develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies. Must also demonstrate strong written communication skills.

Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning and time management skills.

Candidate with training CCNP certification or equivalent work experience is preferred. Candidate with Aruba, Cisco and HP certifications is desired.
