Purpose

Conduct Know Your Right Workshops at children's shelter in NY. Process affirmative immigration applications and assist staff attorneys in the preparation of the immigration case files including compiling application packets in an accurate fashion and providing interpretation/translation for attorney(s) and/or clients when necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct Know Your Rights workshops and support legal screenings of newly arrived migrant children and youth at ORR shelter in New York.
  • Meet with clients to gather information or conduct initial intake, and assist staff attorneys in preparing applications for various immigration benefits including Special Immigrant Juvenile, asylum, family unification, etc.
  • Provide administrative support to the CWS- New York's Immigrant Minor team, including answering client phone calls and scheduling appointments, entering data in case management software, photocopying documents, and submit invoices to the funder.
  • Develop and maintain accurate case list and manage case files. Conduct appropriate file review to ensure that all case files are maintained and services are rendered timely and appropriately.
  • Update job knowledge by participating in continuing educational opportunities. Participate in trainings and courses as needed to obtain partial or full DOJ accreditation.
  • Represent CWS-NY at community-based organization meetings related to immigration issues.
  • Conduct legal research, as directed by staff attorney or supervising attorney.
  • Perform other duties as requested.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience

Experience: The successful candidate will have previous work or volunteer experience with asylum seekers, refugees, asylees, and other immigrants. At least one year of experience as a paralegal in a law office or non-profit legal services environment is preferred.

Other Skills:
The successful candidate must be highly detail oriented and possess superior organizational and task management abilities. Respect for client confidentiality. Ability to work independently to complete tasks with minimal direction. Superior written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish. Strong computer literacy, with knowledge of word processing and database applications, and ability to use standard office equipment in performing varied activities. A valid driver's license and reliable mode of transportation are a must.
