Job Summary

The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) performs a variety of patient care services ensuring quality and timely patient care within the outpatient ambulatory care clinic serving IU South Bend students, employees and the surrounding community. This is a part-time position and would be retirement benefit eligible after 900 hours.

Primary duties and responsibilities:

  • Greets patients and directs to appropriate medical exam room. Obtains and accurately documents medical history, height, weight and vital signs, social history and allergies in the electronic medical record. Reconciles medication list.
  • Assists nurse practitioner upon request during patient examinations. Completes ordered treatments including phlebotomy, ear lavage, applying basic dressings and bandages. Administers immunizations and therapeutic injections, places and read Tuberculin skin tests, perform spirometry/peak flow meter and nebulizer treatments, vision screenings, point of care (rapid) tests, and prepare specimens for transport to laboratory.
  • Assists students rotating/precepting in the clinic.
  • Responsible for vaccine (state funded/private) surveillance including but not limited to ordering and daily log temperatures of refrigerators and freezers. Performs all quality controls of all equipment and tests.
  • Maintains exam rooms according to protocols to ensure rooms are stocked with necessary supplies; cleans rooms between patient exams to comply with infection control standards.
  • Practices universal precautions with respect to established safety protocols. Protects and maintains patient confidentially and rights.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by nurse practitioners, direct of patient services, and operations director.
  • Performs general clerical duties in support of patient services, including but not limited to answering phones, making photocopies, faxing, scanning, typing, completing forms, checking out patients, and performing data entry.
  • Schedules referral appointments as directed. Accesses databases to obtain necessary patient information such as eClinicalWorks, CHIRP, Limsnet, SBMF/LabCorp, etc.
  • Attends staff meetings and mandatory educational or training programs.

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or GED plus completion of an accredited educational program for the Certified Medical Assistant, Licensed Practical Nurse, or Emergency Medical Technician.

One year of experience as a medical assistant, Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).

Basic Life Support certification through the American Heart Association.

American Lung Association certification for PPD Administration & Reading.

Successfully completes other educational training as required by the department or University. Knowledge of data entry, and basic computer skills and basic math skills. Excellent physical assessment skills and phlebotomy skills. Knowledge of various laboratory standards and medical procedures. Strong interpersonal skills. Demonstrates professionalism. Ability to build and maintain positive relationships. Ability to effectively work with culturally diverse populations and maintain confidentiality. Strong communication skills with all levels in an organization. Takes responsibility for solving problems, making improvements, and delivering quality services with a customer-focused mindset.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus, This position also requires the ability to move 60 pounds and perform chest compressions and rescue breathing (in case of medical emergency). The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
