Job Description Summary
The candidate will initiate, contribute, and manage development of multiple projects and study protocols at direction of Principal Investigator. Leads research team to design and conduct qualitative research, instrument development projects which includes proposal development, research design, data collection, qualitative analyses, and report writing, to name a few. Develops literature, reports, grants, manuscripts, and publications to drive funding opportunities. Develops relationships with existing and potential funders, research partners, research sites, regulatory offices, and affiliated organizations as part of stakeholder management. Responsible to train and supervise staff, interface with existing postdoctoral fellows, staff members, and students in the laboratory. Develop and implement all safety procedures in the lab including drafting and implementing new SOPs and protocols for general laboratory practices, in compliance with Safety regulations. Close partnership with Principal Investigator to ensure success of all research in the lab.

Responsible to train and supervise staff, interface with existing postdoctoral fellows, staff members, and students in the laboratory. Develop and implement all safety procedures in the lab including drafting and implementing new SOPs and protocols for general laboratory practices, in compliance with Safety regulations. Close partnership with Principal Investigator to ensure success of all research in the lab.

The candidate will be responsible for the following work:

  • Perform experiments related to organic synthesis, peptide synthesis, and post-synthesis modification in peptides and derivatives, along with their characterization, purification, and basic microbiology and cell culture assays to assess biological activities.
  • Design and synthesize peptide therapeutics.
  • Work alongside computational members to design, discovery, and optimize peptide therapeutics.
  • Learn all assays currently available in the wet lab, perform experiments in facilities, and assist with animal models to determine the anti-infective activity of therapeutic peptides.
  • Mentor and assist other lab members as needed.
  • Organize and develop experiments, maintain equipment and workstations, and update inventory as needed.
  • Leadership, upkeeping, and maintenance of state-of-the-art peptide lab.
  • Extensive expertise in data analysis and manuscript preparation.
  • Expertise in grant writing and fundraising experience.


The candidate must have experience with:
  • Peptide design and synthesis.
  • Chemistry techniques (e.g., handling solvents and reagents, purification of solvents, synthesis and extraction of organic molecules, in solution and solid-phase peptide synthesis, cyclization and conjugation reactions, compounds purification and characterization, including nuclear magnetic resonance, liquid chromatography, gas phase chromatography, mass spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy, thin layer chromatography, etc.).
  • Biophysics techniques (e.g., preparation of vesicles and micelles, perform leakage assays, isothermal titration calorimetry, surface plasmon resonance, circular dichroism, and oriented circular dichroism, among others).
  • Microscopy expertise (e.g., confocal, optical, and fluorescent microscopes, etc.).
  • Expertise using graphical design tools (e.g., ChemDraw and Adobe Illustrator or equivalent software).
  • Lab management.


In addition, the candidate will be responsible for leading and conducting a wide range of biological tests using antimicrobial compounds. Other techniques necessary for this position include proficiency with sterilization techniques; microdilution method for determining minimal inhibitory concentrations; bactericidal, cytotoxicity, and hemolytic assessments against eukaryotic cells; mechanisms of action experiments (DNA binding, Laurdan, NPN uptake, OPNG, DiSC3-5 and other mechanism of action assays); multiplex ELISA assays; resistance development assays; and synergy assays.

Total Base Pay Range for this position is: $51,824 - $91,232.

Qualifications:

Masters Degree required, PhD strongly preferred and 3-5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

This position is contingent upon funding.
