Physician Assistant
The Wilmer Eye center is seeking a Physician Assistant to work collaboratively as a member of an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) team to provide comprehensive care to patients in need of ophthalmic care. The APP will work collaboratively with physicians, residents, fellows and technicians within the retina department. The APP is expected to demonstrate clinical expertise and leadership skills. Using clinical skills in the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of patients with ophthalmic conditions and diseases. The APP assesses visual symptoms and treats any conditions within scope of practice or determines need for escalated assessment by ophthalmology medical fellow or attending. The APP provides anticipatory guidance to the patient as well as patient and family education, and psychosocial and emotional support. The APP has prescriptive authority, which includes Schedule II through VI controlled substances in the State of Maryland.
The APP is responsible for the assessment of patients' condition, planning, implementation and evaluation of the therapeutic regimen for the departments follow up patients. Medical and minor procedure management of these patients, within scope of practice, will be necessary for this position to meet its goals. Duties may involve evaluation and management of patients in clinical setting or enrolled in clinical research trials as well as pre-operative evaluation of patients scheduled for surgery.
The APP works independently with supervision and medical direction by Ophthalmology physicians and practices within the guidelines of the department and institution and in accordance with the physician assistant written agreement. The APP is a member of a multidisciplinary care team that requires effective communication and collaboration with co-workers and staff locally and at other collaborating institutions and agencies. The role requires advanced clinical practice skills, critical thinking, an understanding of research principles and practices, and leadership that improves the quality of care and maximizes the practice of medical care throughout the work setting and community.
