Job Purpose

AkzoNobel Coatings Inc. has a great opportunity for a Pilot Plant Chemist that supports the Industrial Coatings Business.

The Pilot Plant Chemist will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the 15 gallon and 150 gallon pilot reactors in the Huron resin plant. The pilot plant chemist will work alongside the pilot plant operator to run both pilot reactors. Additionally, the pilot plant chemist will be responsible for the scaling up of new resins at the Huron plant.

This role will be primarily located at the Huron resin plant but will also spend time at the Strongsville technology center.

Key Accountabilities

  • Responsible for running batches using the two pilot reactors including loading and sampling the reactors, operation of the reactor control system, performing in-process testing of batches and QC testing of finished goods
  • Communicating with other resin chemists on the outcomes of pilot batches
  • Ownership of the scale-up process for all new resin introductions and resin transfers to the Huron resin plant. This includes resin synthesis on both the lab and pilot scale as well as supervision of initial production batches
  • Routine maintenance and cleaning of all pilot plant equipment and ordering supplies and consumables as needed
  • Ordering raw materials and maintaining inventory and batching system for the pilot plant
  • Along with site HSES - determine proper HMIS codes and PPE requirements for all materials used in pilot plant
  • Along with site HSES - assist in proper determination of waste profiles, tracking and disposal of waste from PP - to meet regulatory requirements
  • Proper organization and storage of raw materials and finished goods in the pilot plant area
  • Proper organization, storage and disposal of retained samples
  • Managing pilot plant visitors and contractors in accordance with site rules
  • Participation in site processes such as BBS, internal audits management review, Safety Day and Quality Day
  • Presenting results and writing technical reports

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Polymer Science or related field
  • Previous experience with polymer synthesis a plus
  • Previous experience in a chemical manufacturing environment a plus
  • Compliance with all site HSES policies and requirements
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
