The mission of Georgetown University Police Department (GUPD) is to protect the Georgetown University community, ensuring a safe and secure learning and living environment through trusting partnerships and professional police services. Our officers are commissioned special police, vested through the District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department.

The Police Sergeant serves as Watch Commander during their tour of duty and supervises patrol officers assigned to provide safety and security to the Georgetown University Main Campus and Medical Center. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Ensures compliance with appropriate written and verbal orders of the Chief of Public Safety and other designated supervisors (including the Deputy Chief and Lieutenants) for all security, police, safety, and traffic matters occurring on and around Georgetown University property
  • Directs the work activities of subordinate employees assigned to him or her and consults with other designated immediate supervisor on appropriate decisions
  • Serves as initial Incident Commander on-scene during incidents and emergencies until relieved by superior
  • Authorizes and sends emergency notifications to the University Community during critical events, in the absence of an on-scene superior
  • Investigates crimes and incidents as they come under their purview
  • Engages in community policing and crime prevention activities
  • If assigned, performs special assignments, including but not limited to Investigations or Crime Prevention Program

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher learning in criminal justice or related field
  • Minimum of 5 years law enforcement experience related to public safety, including at least 1 year of supervisory experience
  • Experience and/or training in situations involving sexual assault and discrimination (including religious, racial, and sexual orientation) preferred [consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of education, training and experience]
  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid driver's license with no violations in the last three years and ability to pass Georgetown University driver's certification.
  • All applicants are subject to a written test, a report writing test, drug test, physical examination by a medical doctor to University specifications, and extensive psychological testing
  • Ability to pass a comprehensive post-offer background investigation
  • Ability to qualify for a Special Police Officer's Commission
  • Confidence using computers, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and email and/or the ability to learn these applications
  • Possession of intermediate knowledge of criminal and civil law and of police practices and procedures
  • Possession of tact, patience, and a courteous demeanor for interactions with students, staff, faculty, visitors, and community members
  • Respect for the use of police powers in relation to a University environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills, including report writing
  • Willingness and availability to work extended, odd, or off hours to achieve the expectations of the Department - including rotating tours of duty (day shifts, evening shifts, overnight shifts) with fluctuating days off, according to departmental needs


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in - and responsibility for - critical incident response and notification procedures
  • Experience and/or training in situations involving sexual assault and discrimination (including religious, racial, and sexual orientation)
  • Knowledge of telecommunications equipment
  • Administrative and clerical skills
  • Some training in law enforcement operations and investigative procedures; experience and responsibility for critical incident response and notification procedures; and/or experience and/or training in situations involving sexual assault and discrimination - including religious, racial, and sexual orientation
  • Experience and/or certified training as an investigator to include Crime Scene and Death Investigations, evidence/property collection and preservation, interview/interrogation, latent fingerprint collection, and overt/covert electronic surveillance techniques
  • NCIC certification or eligibility for certification; demonstrated ability to conduct interviews and investigate complex cases; and ability to testify in grand juries, hearings, and trials; and prepare affidavits, warrants, and investigative reports
  • Knowledge of court system; modern police practices; crime investigation methods; presentation of physical evidence; principles and practices of police supervision; GUPD regulations, policies, and procedures; and University policies and procedures
  • Ability to explain and interpret provision of laws, ordinances, and regulations
  • Training and experience in Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) and risk evaluation
  • A solid understanding of Jeanne Clery Act

Working Conditions and Physical Demands: Very Heavy: Daily requirements to move items up to 20lbs of weight. Frequently required over 50lbs of weight and walk or stand with operation of controls. Occasionally tasked with moving items weighing over 100lbs.

Essential Staff: The Police Sergeant is designated as Essential under the University Personnel policy guidelines and therefore is subject to be on-call when necessary. They must be willing and available to work extended, odd, or off hours to achieve the expectations and requirements of the Department - to include rotating tours of duty (day shifts, evening shifts, overnight shifts) with fluctuating days off.
