Position Overview:

The Director, Portfolio Optimization & Supply is responsible for optimizing across the entire value chain that encompasses Motiva's portfolio, which includes North America's largest refinery. This position also ensures alignment and execution of Motiva's economic targets with objectives established for Refining, Chemicals, Supply & Trading and Marketing & Sales.

Who/what does this job manage?

The Director, Portfolio Optimization & Supply directs the below cross-functional teams to identify operational profit/performance improvement opportunities.

  • Supply Operations - Responsible for the efficient and reliable transportation of Clean Products (Gasoline, Jet, Diesel) throughout the Motiva system. This scheduling team interfaces with the Clean Products Trading Team, responsible for buying/selling system barrels, and the Marketing & Sales organization, responsible for selling hydrocarbon fuels to the end consumer.
  • Channel Optimization - Responsible for maximizing the end-to-end value of the Clean Products system downstream of the refinery. This optimization team provides the economic steer to the Supply Operations, Clean Product Trading, and Marketing & Sales organizations, ensuring that every barrel generates the maximum return for Motiva.
  • Refinery & Chemicals Optimization - Responsible for maximizing the refining and chemicals margin of the Port Arthur Manufacturing Complex (PAMC). This team works closely with the PAMC Economics & Scheduling (E&S) Team to ensure that the site hydrocarbon plan maximizes reliability, stability, and profitable. This optimization team provides the economic steer to the Trading organization for every barrel bought or sold for PAMC.
  • Supply Trading & Logistics Performance - Responsible for tracking and reporting the performance of the ST&L organization. This analysis team works with each department in ST&L to deliver a clear and concise performance narrative.
  • Business Process Improvement - Responsible for spearheading business process improvements and technologic innovations across ST&L. This business improvement team manages key tools and work processes that enable success through the ST&L organization.
  • Commercial & Business Development - Responsible for maximizing the utilization and profitability of Motiva's logistics, assets and contracts.

What does the job provide/enable?
  • Leadership of an integrated centralized team that advises and supports Motiva's commercial business and assets.
  • Aligns value chain optimization efforts towards established strategic objectives of maximizing returns, minimizing risks, and achieving exceptional financial results across Motiva assets.
  • Develops solutions for realizing sustained business improvements on tactical issues related to commercially optimizing existing assets.

Responsibilities:
  • Advises and aligns with Feedstocks and Products Trading to position Motiva in the domestic and international markets for maximum profitability and value generation.
  • Acts as a liaison between Trading, Chemicals, Scheduling, and Refining Economic Planning on all tactical optimization and collaborates with Business Development on mid-term commercial strategies.
  • Leads a team in assessment of regional supply chain economics. Identifies and evaluates opportunities to capture the best possible outcomes.
  • Leads a team that develops optimized and executable production plans for refineries through use of linear programming (LP) simulation models and other planning tools.
  • Monitor's refiner operations and market prices. Modifies production plans as needed to adjust to demand/margin changes and maximize refineries profit. Leads meetings with the refinery leadership team to coordinate and communicate production plans to achieve alignment and ownership.
  • Partners with refineries' optimization group to review LP "back costing" studies comparing actual performance to plan by refinery and region. Works with process engineering to improve accuracy of refineries' LP models.
  • Serves as a lead on integrated system optimization activities and/or in developing and modifying system wide work processes. Provides direction and leadership for other members of the commercial team.
  • Trains, mentors, directs and collaborates with the other members of the Supply Trading and Logistics team.

Experience and Qualifications Required:

Basic Qualifications:

Ideal candidate has served at a refinery in a production planning and commercial optimization leadership role. Has directed work teams in crude and feedstock selection, production selection, finished product slate optimization based on unit availability, business need and market conditions.
  • Master's Degree preferred
  • Domestic/international oil trading experience
  • Refining/process engineering and planning & supply coordination experience
  • Marketing experience
  • Business optimization experience
  • Safety minded
  • Commercial leadership experience
  • Leadership acumen (supervisor, superintendent, or manager); Refining Operations, Refining Maintenance, Refining Technical, Refining Projects, Refining Economics and Planning.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong leadership skills, experienced stakeholder engagement, able to work independently, taking initiative and bringing forward insights and recommendations.
  • Strong critical thinking, communication, influencing and relationship building skills.
  • Ability to facilitate, constructively challenge and influence business leadership.
  • Economic evaluation, scheduling, planning and refinery operations experience is critical.
