University Information Services (UIS) provides technical services and enterprise applications to the University of Colorado's (CU) four campuses and the Office of the President. UIS is committed to excellence in customer service, technical expertise, and the development of enterprise applications responsible for supporting CU's students, faculty, staff, and others.

Position Summary:

As part of the Data Governance group on the Data and Business Intelligence (BI) team, this position exists to administer and maintain a data governance catalog product, Collibra, which exists to support the understanding of data therefore enhancing reporting and analytics for the university.

The Principal Data Governance Engineer is a customer-centric position focused on collaborating with and advising stakeholders, developing reports for internal UIS customers, communicating the roll-out of enhancements, administration, and end-user adoption and continued successes of the Collibra deliverables. This role provides ongoing end-user support and maintains a solid data catalog architecture environment and provides customer guidance on BI best practices as a member of a Data Governance group on the Data & Business Intelligence team.

This position reports to the Assistant Director of Data and Business Intelligence and is exempt from the State of Colorado Classified Staff system.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provides overall Collibra subject matter expertise
  • Identifies Collibra best practices relevant to and required by our CU stakeholders
  • Participates in meetings, workshops, and interviews (as necessary) with Business and IT stakeholders to understand strategy and requirements
  • Develops and delivers Metagovernance recommendations
  • Designs and configures metamodel, Collibra structure reflecting how CU is organized around data assets and metadata asset model
  • Designs automated and manual metadata import/export methods
  • Conducts meetings and reviews documentation as required
  • Develops and delivers training materials, use case and asset model documentation, as well as implementation specification
  • Recommends curation processes for high quality content in Collibra
  • Provides recommendations for leveraging full functionality of Collibra platform (workflow, lineage diagrams, UI, dashboards, views, etc.)
  • Configures and maintains the required server infrastructure
  • Collaborates with a third party, Collibra, to partner with and coordinate upgrades on the cloud
  • Works with the communication team directly on CU wide communications required
  • Supports any issues or bugs introduced into the tool or process
  • Central point of contact for any data catalog questions or issues that arise, to pass to the correct owner to resolve
  • Responsible to create product content for internal website

Secondary Responsibilities:
  • Captures business, functional, technical and data requirements for design, configuration, and expansion of Collibra
  • Undertakes curation efforts by working with data stewards and stakeholders to collect, edit, enhance, consolidate, relate, and obtain approval of data assets and associated metadata destined for Collibra
  • Identifies, analyzes, and documents existing repositories or data management practices to accelerate Collibra metadata opportunities
  • Consults with IT, enterprise, and data architecture SMEs
  • Trains CU personnel on functionality implemented, including search, navigation, and metadata maintenance activities
  • Supports and delivers Metagovernance recommendations including Asset Models and Operating Models
  • Develops deliverables for Collibra strategy required to enable and/or support data governance and management capabilities

What We Offer:

Salary: The anticipated hiring range has been established at $98,000-$105,000.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Please ensure your resume includes any and all relevant experience to be accurately assessed against these qualifications.  You must meet all minimum requirements listed at the time of application to be considered for this role.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education, or equivalent professional experience (professional experience may be substituted for the degree on a year-for-year basis)
  • Four (4) years' data and business intelligence experience, which includes:
    • Professional experience with reporting, data warehousing, and data governance
    • SQL experience
  • One (1) year of data governance tool architecture and/or administration

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Six (6) years' experience as detailed above
  • Experience as a Collibra Architect or Administrator
  • Technical Lead experience managing design, development and implementation, and upgrades resulting in high quality, and performance without supervision
  • Experience in a higher education setting
  • Experience reporting on data warehouse data, exposure to star-schema design
  • Thorough understanding of the software development life cycle (SDLC)
  • Experience facilitating training sessions for large audiences
  • Working knowledge of ETL code, database design and data modeling
  • Professional experience developing reports using Cognos version 11 or newer, MicroStrategy, Tableau or other report tool to build complex, robust reports, OLAP cubes and dashboards, along with administrator experience
  • Managing data governance processes
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of SQL and Relations Database Management Systems (RDMS)
  • Ability to effectively communicate, in writing and verbally

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to provide enthusiastic service orientation with sensitivity to the needs of users at all skill levels
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Understanding of all software development life cycle (SDLC) areas
  • Knowledgeable in BPMN and Workflow creation
  • Skilled at Java, Rest API, JSON, XML, and SOAP
