What you will be doing:

Helen of Troy's Health & Wellness division is looking for a Principal Engineer in our Advanced Technology and Innovation Group to spearhead the creation of new technologies and businesses. This role will be responsible for all aspects of getting new technologies/businesses from their nascent stages to the point where fully developed solutions can be launched into the market.

These new ventures may be in any of our business segments but will have a heavier focus on consumer medical applications, including measurement and diagnostics. The projects/businesses will include a mix of large and small opportunities.

Although the focus of this individual will be on software, hardware, firmware, and algorithms, this person will have exposure to other areas, including mechanical, chemistry, material science, and manufacturing.

The person in this role will be responsible for identifying and assessing new technologies and developing them to varying levels of maturity. Sometimes, this will be as an individual contributor and lead a multi-functional team, including outside vendors. The right person for this role will have a strong technical background and be curious, creative, and tenacious by nature.

  • Overall -
    • Identify and explore new technology opportunities in the consumer market that can create a sustainable competitive advantage for Health and Home.
    • Run all that is necessary to develop technologies to the point where they can be introduced as successful new products that delight end users.
  • Technology Responsibilities -
    • Identify and vet new technologies (and their associated companies)
    • Identify external resources/consultants to provide guidance & expertise
    • Act as an individual contributor to hardware and software projects
    • Lead technical teams - drive early-stage development tasks, experiments, and vetting.
    • In conjunction with IP resources, explore patent space around potential solutions - prior art searches, freedom to operate...etc.
    • Demonstrate products through compelling prototypes
    • Explore cost ramifications of different technologies and architectures and volume sensitivities
    • Drive understanding of robustness in advance of full product design
    • Work with regulatory resources to ensure the product passes all appropriate certifications
    • Participate as an individual contributor whenever/wherever possible/appropriate
  • UX/Design Responsibilities -
    • Work closely with design and all user-focused disciplines to ensure a delightful user experience
    • Drive understanding of use cases and user interactions
    • Drive user testing and feedback to fix problems and optimize the design


Skills needed to be successful in this role:
  • Excellent creative problem-solving skills
  • Willingness to take responsible risks and fail
  • The ability to communicate ideas clearly and sell them up and down the organization
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a group, leading complementary teams
  • Leading and participating in multi-functional teams (e.g., engineers, scientists, designers, marketers, creative...etc.)


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or similar
  • Proven understanding of technology and technology trends
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Project
  • Software: C, C++, Assembly, SQL, MATLAB
  • Hardware: analog and digital design, general microprocessor circuits


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in early-stage development of consumer and/or medical products
  • Experience with both physical products and software/UI
  • Experience as an entrepreneur or Intrapreneur
  • Experience with audio - software, and hardware
  • Involvement in user research and testing
