Job Info

Basic Job Functions:

Universal Industrial Gases, LLC. (UIG) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Nucor and a well-established, global engineer, constructor, supplier and operator of air separation plants and related equipment and services, based in Bethlehem, PA. UIG owns and operates production plants across the USA which supply both Nucor steel sites and third-party clients 24/7 with tonnage quantities of oxygen, nitrogen and argon as well as exporting liquid cryogenic products by road tanker.

UIG has an immediate opening for a Process Systems Engineer in Bethlehem, PA, although there is potential for this position to work remotely on a regularbasis.

Responsibilities include:

  • development of an accurate and timely Process and Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID) for cryogenic air separation and liquefaction projects which produce and distribute gaseous and liquid oxygen, nitrogen, and argon. The systems include: compressors, pre-purification units, packaged refrigeration systems, cold boxes containing heat exchangers, distillation columns, separators and cryogenic process pumps, cryogenic storage tanks and transfer pumps, vaporization systems, pipelines, trailer loading systems, and utilities such as instrument air, utility nitrogen, potable water, and condensate and sanitary drain systems.
  • utilize the following resources to develop the UIG project P&ID: reference P&ID's from previous UIG projects, vendor information such as P&ID's, general arrangement drawings, electrical drawings, installation & operating manuals, site plan drawings, and other customer requirements and specifications.
  • Provide P&ID updates on a regular basis via detailed red-line markups as the design evolves and vendor information becomes available. This information will be provided to the Engineering Manager and multi-discipline team (including CAD drafting technicians and electrical, instrumentation, and piping designers and engineers).
  • detailed review of vendor drawings and in-house design drawings, commenting on the drawings, and updating the UIG P&ID as the plant design and vendor information are finalized.

Safety is an important part of all jobs within Nucor; therefore, candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead and uphold safety practices, policies, procedures and housekeeping standards to make safety a priority at all times.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 10 years in the design, commissioning / startup, or operation of cryogenic air separation plants.
  • Experience with integrating various vendor-supplied major equipment and subsystems into the overall P&ID, at minimum cost, while addressing all safety, reliability, maintainability, and operability issues.
  • Experience with process engineering of cryogenic air separation plants. This position does not require detailed knowledge or use of process design software like ASPEN, however those skills are a definite plus.
  • Experience with design and detail of operation of multi-stage integral gear compressors and dry-screw compressors such as those made by Ingersoll-Rand, Atlas Copco, and Hanwa Power Systems.
  • Experience with design and construction of cryogenic storage tanks, both shop-built vacuum-insulated tanks, and field-erected perlite-insulated flat bottom tanks.
  • Experience with electrical design and ability to read electrical single-line drawings, schematics, motor vendor drawings, etc.
  • Experience with 3-dimensional piping design, ability to review and interpret 3-D design drawings, and ability to constructively comment on equipment layout issues.
  • Experience with instrumentation and control system design and ability to interpret panel and field wiring design drawings.
  • Experience with the HAZOP work process and ability to lead hazard review meetings, if required.
  • Experience with a variety of documentation formats for vendor P&ID's and information.

  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in the area of P&ID engineering and integration of mechanical and cryogenic systems.
  • Competence with standard Microsoft Office tools including Excel and Word, and ability to integrate new technology tools into day-to-day work.
  • Ability to travel occasionally

  • Nucor is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer - M/F/Disabled/Vets - and a drug - free workplace
