About the Department:

The Meadows School of the Arts Production Unit supports all aspects of production for the Divisions of Dance, Music and Theatre. Additionally, the Production Unit supports Meadows-wide events as necessary. An average performance season consists of three dance concerts, one opera, and seven plays presented in three venues - a proscenium house, a flexible black box, and a classic thrust.

About the Position:

The Prop Supervisor will be responsible for building, purchasing, renting, borrowing, or altering all props needed for main stage productions in the Theater, Dance, and Music Divisions. The supervisor will also organize, maintain, and grow SMU's stock of props; coordinate prop rentals and reciprocal borrowing arrangements for both students and outside groups. Educate students on safe working practices, prop building skills, and appropriate communication between scenic designers and properties supervisors. Manage budgets for individual shows and prop shop supplies. Work in concert with Artistic Staff and other Production Personnel, as part of a collaborative team.

Essential Functions:

  • Build, engineer, purchase, rent, borrow, or alter all props needed for main stage productions in the Theater, Dance, and Opera divisions.
  • Educate students on safe working practices, prop building skills, and appropriate communication between scenic designers and properties supervisors.
  • Manage budgets for individual shows and prop shop supplies.
  • Organize, maintain, and grow SMU's stock of props; coordinate prop rentals and reciprocal borrowing arrangements for both students and outside groups
  • This position does require evening and weekend availability.
  • Occasional travel may be required.
  • A valid driver's license is required.


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

A Bachelor's degree is required. A Bachelor's degree in theatre production, design or art is preferred.

Three years work experience in theatrical production prop fabrication, shopping and crafting is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University and develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies. Must also demonstrate strong written communication skills.

Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning and time management skills.

Candidate must be able to use standard shop equipment such as a table saw, band saw, drill press, jig, grinder, etc.

Experience welding and working with upholstery is highly desirable.

Candidate must have experience with Microsoft Office.

A working knowledge of Vectorworks or AutoCad is preferred.

Experience using Concur is preferred.
