Job Summary

Department-Specific Responsibilities:

Indiana University Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) seeks a Psychiatric Nurse practitioner to work with college age populations in an interdisciplinary university counseling center.

  • Responsibilities include completion of a health assessment, determining diagnosis, planning, and prescribing treatment within the parameters of medical staff privileges at IU Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and area of expertise.
  • This position is for a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) who is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) with specialized, advanced education and clinical competency to provide behavioral health care for a diverse population in a university setting.
Patient Care in CAPS
  • Psychiatric diagnostic evaluations/ Prescribe medications/ Develop treatment plans.
  • Evaluating students to determine psychiatric risk for suicidal ideation, homicidal ideation, and psychosis. Provide psychiatric urgent care in crisis situations.
  • Assess social/economic factors for each patient to individualize care.
  • Assess response(s) of medication interventions and revises interventions to achieve optimum results. Collaborate, consult, and coordinate patient care with CAPS providers as needed.
Administrative Tasks
  • Completing medical-need forms for students seeking insurance benefits for medication.
  • Respond to any client messages taken down by front office staff.
  • Respond to prescription refill requests.
  • Respond to insurance company inquiries.
  • Work with ECW to ensure notes are completed and signed.
  • Consult with Physician routinely and as needed for case consultation.
  • Consulting with interdisciplinary treatment team meetings.
  • Collaborate and coordinate patient care with CAPS clinical staff as needed.
General Responsibilities:
  • Elicit, record, and interpret a complete health history. Perform, record and interpret a complete physical examination.
  • Select and order appropriate tests and procedures necessary to augment physical findings and distinguish between normal and abnormal findings. Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as necessary and appropriate for the care of the patient.
  • Collaborate with the attending physician, social worker, staff nurses, private physicians, sub-specialists, other appropriate health team members to plan and coordinate care and follow-up of pediatric patients with suspected maltreatment.
  • Collaborate, communicate and coordinate with child protection services, law enforcement and prosecutors to help educate and inform them in the patient's condition and medical care plan.
  • Participate in psychosocial management of patients and families.
  • Take an active role in the performance of clinical research.
  • Take an active role in the development and performance of community outreach.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required
  • Master's degree in Nursing or completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
Preferred
  • Doctoral degree in Nursing.
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 2 years of nursing experience.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required
  • Registered Nurse issued by the State of Indiana upon hire.
  • Prescriptive authority within 90 days from hire.
Preferred
  • Current licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in Indiana.
  • Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner by ANCC or AANP.
  • Current DEA certification.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires sedentary work as well as extended durations of moving about the workplace. It requires the ability to move objects and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds, and the ability to discern between various objects and devices and to position patients. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
