Position Overview

The Quality Engineer develops, maintains and ensures compliance to the business system at Novelis Oswego focused on product quality improvement and the control of manufacturing processes. This is inclusive of any 3rd party quality standards the site is certified to and any specific quality system requirements applied to the site by customers. The Quality Engineer also acts as a strategic statistical resource for Oswego and an active promoter of the correct use of statistical process control methodologies across the site. The active management of a wide variety of sub-systems designed to promote the quality business system and the implementation of statistical methods also falls within the scope of the Quality Engineer.

  • Tower Observations and Coaching of Observations
  • Participation in Work Place Assessment Audits
  • Management Representative for TS16949, ISO 14001, OSHAS 18001
  • Management Review Function
  • Internal and External System Audits
  • Introduction of new or updated quality system methods
  • Management of Change (MOC) system
  • 3rd Party audits
  • Supplier audits
  • Customer Concession system
  • Production Part Approval (PPAP) system
  • Measurement System Analysis (Calibration) system
  • Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA) development
  • Production Part Approval Process
  • Basic probability
  • Control charting
  • Project Quality Planning
  • Development of SPC Implementations
  • Interpretation of historical data
  • Assessment of proposed statistical methods

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's in Metallurgy or Metallurgical Engineering
    • Or a minimum of ten years' experience in relevant aluminum fabrication assignments
  • Thorough knowledge of product/ processes procedures, as well as, product customer requirements
  • Superior customer service skills
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) skills; ability to communicate with all levels in the organization
  • Personal traits should include the ability to utilize human relation skills to motivate, train, understand, and develop others to attain the objectives of the Operations Support Department
  • Desire to take initiative and develop a pro-active relationship with customers through follow-up, understanding their needs and fostering a collaborative relationship
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload; must be able to manage multiple tasks at once without sacrificing attention to detail
  • Must be flexible and able to operate in a fast-paced environment
  • Solid computer skills with software applications proficiency, including Microsoft Office. Ability to learn new software programs quickly

Location Profile

Novelis' Oswego facility is located on Lake Ontario in north-central New York and employs approximately 1100 people. The Oswego site produces more than a billion pounds of high-quality aluminum sheet each year in order to serve our customers in the automotive beverage can and specialty markets.
