Job Purpose

AkzoNobel Coatings Inc. has a great opportunity for a R&D Specialist III located at our Strongsville Technology Center in Strongsville, Ohio.

The R&D Specialist III is an important member of the Polymer and Coatings Analysis Group, characterizing the intrinsic chemical properties of raw materials and coatings formulations. The role in the P&CA group provides key analytical data to R&D, Tech Service and Supply Chain to support new product development and existing products, process and raw material optimization, and resolution of customer complaints.

The R&D Specialist III will be highly organized, self-motivated and able to work easily with cross-functional groups (sales, marketing, supply chain). The successful candidate must be able to communicate clearly in both written and oral communications, and keep up-to-date, detailed records on all work underway. The individual will sustain a safe work environment by maintaining a clean and orderly laboratory, and observing the company's safety rules to ensure compliance with federal, state and local environmental and safety regulations.

Key Accountabilities

  • Conform with all site and laboratory safety requirements and policies
  • Perform both standard and novel laboratory tests using appropriate analytical instruments and methods. This work includes pre and post-experiment calculations, sample preparation, as well as preparing detailed reports. Statistical analysis of data may be required. A chromatography (GC, GPC, HPLC) and/or spectroscopy (FT-IR, ICP) background is preferred.
  • Will interface with the AkzoNobel technical community (chemists, formulators, engineers) and R&D managers. Cross-discipline meetings will be attended as necessary.
  • Will make personal growth an important part of their activity. The willingness and desire to learn about various analytical instrumentation and theory is paramount. This may take the form of in-house training, attending training courses, or professional society meetings.
  • Available to travel, as necessary (10%)

Qualifications

  • A minimum of Bachelor's degree in Physical or Biological Science
  • 2-5 years work experience in chemistry or coatings industry; preferably analytical chemistry
  • The ability and desire to operate sophisticated analytical equipment. Previous experience in the use of FT-IR, ICP, GC , GPC and/or HPLC preferred, with an emphasis on using the data generated to solve customer or production problems and support research goals.
  • Strong computer skills including proficiency in MS-Office suite
  • The ability to trouble shoot and maintain instrumentation as needed. Hands on, mechanical skills are a plus.
