GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: Summarize the nature and level of work performed.

Under the direction of the Chief Radiation Therapist and Lead Radiation Therapist, the Radiation Therapist Clinical Assistant is responsible for assisting the clinical radiation oncology team (physicians, nurses, radiation therapists, medical assistants, and administrative assistants) with tasks that are required to maintain operations of the Radiation Oncology department. This position assists in patient support services related to patient care coordination, check-in process, patient radiation treatment preparation, transport, maintenance of the inventory of department supplies, and administrative quality assurance checks as assigned.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: In order of importance, list essential areas of responsibility, major job duties, special projects, and key objectives for this position. These items should be evaluated throughout the year and included in the written annual evaluation.

  • Works with radiation therapist to assist in efficient daily operations and patient workflow.
  • Prepares rooms with proper equipment & immobilization devices.
  • Assists radiation therapist with patient positioning, moving, and lifting during radiation therapy treatments.
  • Transport inpatients to and from Radiation Oncology department.
  • Assist with Covid positive patient escort to and from Radiation Oncology department.
  • Ensure treatment rooms and clinical rooms are properly stocked with supplies and laundry.
  • Administrative support
    • Answers phone calls and assist with scheduling of patient appointments
    • Assist with patient check in process
    • Assist clinical staff with patient care coordination
  • Transport materials to and from the Radiation Oncology departments.
  • Monitors and replenishes the department's stock and linen supplies
  • Any other related duties as directed by Lead and Chief Therapist.


  • Qualifications
    SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: Must be realistic, objective, measurable and related to essential functions of this job.

  • Demonstrates understanding of Universal precautions, aseptic technique, hand hygiene and maintains cleanliness of exam rooms and equipment.
  • Provides safe patient care.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal professional relationships with physicians, management, peers, patients, and their families.
  • Must convey a positive attitude and present a professional appearance.
  • Must have effective communication (both oral and written) skills sufficient to resolve conflicts, and relay information concisely to staff, patients, and other hospital personnel.
  • Must have sufficient organizational skills.
  • Must have interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients who may be under physical and/or emotional stress.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, keeping track of details and following through to completion within specific time limits.
  • Familiarity with office equipment; photocopy machines, computers, printers, and facsimiles
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Technical proficiency (i.e., internet, email, computer-based searches)

    Minimum Required:

    High school diploma or GED

    Certificate

    Some college or Associate Degree

    EXPERIENCE: Indicate the required and preferred (optional)amount and type of experience.

    • Previous Experience in Radiation Oncology or Radiology preferred
    • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills
    • Exceptional verbal and oral communication skills.
    • Ability to learn and quickly become competent in electronic learning management systems

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: Authority to hire, promote, terminate (if applicable); list the number of FTEs supervised.

    None

    FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY (if applicable): Indicate financial "scope" information, i.e. size of budget, volume, revenue, etc.; Indicate total physician/non-physician FTE scope.

  • Must be prepared to work overtime, holidays, and weekends, as needed.
  • Must be prepared to work and excel in a stressful, complex, and demanding team environment with varying workload, necessitating varying working hours.
  • Works with ionizing radiation, radioactive isotopes, computers, cancer patients, both adults and children, and their families.
  • Exposure to human waste and disease.
