This position has dual responsibilities within the Recreation Department that include serving as the fitness center supervisor along with the planning and implementation of recreational student programming.

Essential Functions

  • Create a welcoming, friendly fitness environment for all OC students, faculty, and staff
  • Supervise patrons utilizing the fitness center; resolving situations as they arise for guests and staff while following all reporting procedures.
  • Supervise, train, and manage student staff in conjunction with the Athletic and Recreation Specialist. This position is responsible for helping student staff learn accountability, professionalism, excellent customer service, and attention to detail.
  • Ensure a safe, clean, and friendly fitness center environment for OC students, faculty and staff.
  • This includes such activities as enforcing policies, maintaining the published maintenance schedule, following procedures for reporting and logging broken machines when it occurs, initiate additional cleaning as necessary, and improving procedures to ensure the best customer service experience for all guests.
  • Use the Fitness Trac Computer program input participant data.
  • This position must have working knowledge of FERPA laws and must enforce such laws while performing their duties along with monitoring student staff to ensure compliance.
  • Main contact for emergency preparedness communication within the PE Building/Building 9 during open gym hours.
  • Coordinate and communicate the responsibilities of supervisors and employees during emergency situations.
  • Participates actively in the Recreation Department meetings and other departmental and group meetings as may be required;
  • Makes oral and written progress, proposals, evaluations, promotional, and adjustment reports; maintains records to assess facilities usage and evaluate programs;
  • Oversee issuance of recreation equipment and supplies
  • This position may also:

  • Assists in contacting community resources in planning for special events;
  • Coordinates work with other personnel engaged in carrying out recreation activities;
  • Assist in planning, organizing and scheduling recreational activities; assist in preparation of facilities to support these activities
  • Assist in publicizing, scheduling and executing programming events.
  • Assist in coordination of recreational staff and campus departments in conducting tournaments and events; assist in preparation and distribution of promotional materials; enforce institutional rules; schedule facilities use and on- or off-campus areas used; monitor events; recommend facility maintenance
  • Keep records to assess facilities usage and evaluate programs
  • Assist in training and guidance of student staff working as officials, program coordinators, building attendants, etc
  • Perform other related duties as required and/or assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • High School Diploma or Equivalent

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Two years' experience utilizing a weight room.
    • Two years of collegiate sports participation may substitute for the educational requirements.

    Terms of Employment

    Hourly employees must work 480 hours in a rolling six-month period to become eligible for health benefits. Hourly employees must work 70 hours in any five months for two consecutive years to become eligible for retirement. This is an hourly position scheduled to work up to 18 hours per week, with a salary of $16.61. They are not initially eligible for benefits upon hire but could qualify for the following. Deferred Compensation Program (DRS) retirement savings plan; TIAA supplemental retirement savings plan, sick leave, paid holidays, Aflac, space available tuition waiver, Employee Assistance Program (EAP), fitness center, reduced rate, and priority consideration on-site childcare on a space available.
