Job Description

Why you want to work at Flexion:

We're looking for a UX/UI Designer with an unwavering passion for working in autonomous, self-directed teams to build and secure complex systems using lean, agile mindsets. You will deliver incremental business value with each sprint and enable options at all scales. For this project, you will be working with a team that will be modernizing a critical state government system and helping to improve the lives of millions of state residents.

Flexion is an agile software company that's been delivering excellence for over 24 years. Our company culture is built on autonomy, trust, and transparency. We empower teams to remain self-sufficient and self-directed by hiring people who can solve complex problems through collaboration-this means lending a hand and flexing your multi-skilled muscles (security and application engineering, DevOps, research, business analysis, information architecture, etc.) as needed. Every member within a cross-functional team is a leader who takes responsibility for the entire team's success, which mirrors the company's overall flat structure. You will tackle a wide variety of technical problems and exercise and expand your full range of skills and experience

What the job looks like:

The User Experience (UX) Designer is an interdisciplinary role responsible for crafting research-based experiences for targeted users. As a member of a cross-functional team, you will be involved in designing how users interact with products and services from product ideation to release. You will uncover real user problems through creative research methods, and use research-driven insights to produce strategic, and scalable solutions for our clients.

  • Work independently and collaboratively alongside other researchers, designers, and members of the larger cross-functional team
  • Work with Product Owners and Engineers to conceptualize and prioritize features, flows, and user interfaces for development.
  • Facilitate continuous discovery with customers to not only identify opportunities but to consistently evaluate solutions as the team's understanding of the problem space evolves
  • Facilitate design workshops
  • Advocate for the users in the context of business needs/goals throughout the project
  • Collaborate with other Designers to plan and execute research activities to align with the project goals, timelines, and overall product vision
  • Conduct user and business research through various methods as they are appropriate to answer research questions and ensure continued project progress; embrace "just enough" research
  • Own the research process by collaborating with other disciplines and using creative and strategic thinking to solicit different types of information from various sources
  • Collect and synthesize complex information to provide actionable insights to that shape the UX strategy and design decisions
  • Communicate research findings and design direction using artifacts as they are appropriate, including (to name a few) personas, journey maps, object maps, user flows, prototypes
  • Design user interfaces and experiences, communicated through early design concepts, low and high fidelity wireframes, and interactive prototypes
  • Assess effectiveness and usability of products through continuous research, usability testing, and design iterations
  • Follow lean and agile methodologies to deliver a quality product with minimal churn

Why we want to hire you:

You thrive working in a dynamic environment and think, design, and code with the knowledge that things will change. You can design small pieces as you go, while still thinking about how they fit into the whole. You welcome change as a positive thing and never look at anything you deliver as "final." You understand when "good enough" really is good enough, without ever compromising on the overall product quality. You want to work with team members who challenge you every day. You demonstrate an unwavering commitment to automated code coverage.

You love solving big problems. You can balance high-level strategy with detail-oriented tactics. You're just as at home leading a discovery session with C-level executives as you are sketching prototype ideas or writing user stories. You can speak "developer" and co-create designs and solutions throughout the process.

You're a self-starter and don't need to be told what to do next. You have a wide range of UX-related skills and can flex different muscles as required. You know how to create and implement design systems and value consistency-but also know when to make adjustments to improve usability. You value data-driven decision-making, but won't become paralyzed if the data doesn't exist.

You have:
  • At least four years experience conducting user research and UX design/wireframing for clients
  • Strong collaboration skills with proven ability to work within a geographically distributed team
  • The ability to communicate and facilitate discussion around usability, accessibility, and interaction design with stakeholders and team members from a variety of backgrounds
  • Strong visual and user interface design skills, including the application of design systems and common interaction patterns
  • Experience creating, customizing, and working with existing design systems and component libraries
  • Ability to effectively communicate research findings, conceptual ideas, detailed design, and design rationale and goals both verbally and visually.
  • A "can do" attitude devoid of ego
  • The ability to adapt and pivot based on research findings, fluctuations in team composition, or changes in project direction
  • Experience working on a cross-functional agile team

At Flexion, we live by these principles:
  • Speak openly and honestly with your colleagues and clients about problems and proposed solutions
  • Welcome and handle changing requirements and priorities with little or no warning
  • Collaborate online in small groups about 50% of the time
  • Encourage simple and minimal solutions that keep options open
  • Expect and vocally advocate for quality and security first
  • Learn new practices and techniques as the situation demands
  • Ensure the teams develop demonstrable software every week or two
  • Do what needs to be done to deliver the product or project without ego or attitude
  • Dig deep to find the root causes of problems so we can create the right solutions
  • Relentlessly improve yourself, your team, and your processes
