The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Department of Psychiatry is seeking a Research Assistant to join our multi-disciplinary team to assist in the performance of clinical research in the Nopoulos Lab. The Peg Nopoulos Laboratory conducts research that is designed to evaluate brain development and its relationship to long term behavioral, cognitive, and emotional outcome. Our studies investigate the impact of various medical conditions throughout the lifespan - from shortly after birth to mature adulthood. We are looking for applicants who are outgoing, personable, professional, enthusiastic, and above all patient-focused.
The successful applicant will assist in the coordination of our efforts to recruit subjects, schedule and test participants, and manage the data. This position offers a rewarding combination of involvement in cutting-edge research and patient interaction as well as strong preparation for graduate school or a career in research providing experience in neuroimaging, neuropsychological assessment, and data analysis.
Duties to include:

  • Assisting in the performance of clinical research by managing subject recruitment, scheduling and enrollment; planning of research visits and administrating study protocols
  • Managing post-visit documentation and expense resolution
  • Assisting in the processing of data obtained; gathering information upon request and assisting in the preparation of material for inclusion in reports and publications; and, if needed, assisting with regulatory submissions and project maintenance
  • Demonstrating satisfactory knowledge of research techniques and procedures relating to the performance of medical/psychiatric research, including reading and understanding protocols.
  • Recruiting potential study participants via known registries, applicable clinics, conferences and collaborative sites
  • Responding to inquiries about assigned projects and presenting at informational sessions and panel discussions
  • Screening potential study participants based upon project criteria and gauging both parent and child understanding of study expectations.
  • Managing the scheduling of testing and appointments, including arrangement of travel, on-site room and equipment reservations and physician consults, and confirming arrangements with scheduled participants
  • Coordinating of the test day agenda, including arranging daily activities to prepare for research protocols, setting up materials and equipment for assessment, performing procedures within all protocols, safety and compliance guidelines
  • Explaining project procedures to participants, obtaining informed consent and other required regulatory documents, and monitoring participant experience for reportable events
  • Preparing and administering tests of cognition and behavior with minor children; assisting parents of minor children in completion of project forms and questionnaires
  • Scoring assessments and recording data collected as directed
  • Maintaining current research visit records and documentation.
  • Maintaining contact information of project participants in a secure database and proactively managing scheduling of follow up study visits to comply with project longitudinal goals.
  • Assisting in the maintenance of regulatory compliances under guidance.
  • If necessary, performing library research on specified topics and preparing bibliographies and abstracts according to instructions.
  • Assisting in the preparation of material for reports to be written by faculty and staff on research projects. Preparing information upon request for reporting to funding source(s).

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree supplemented by progressively responsible experience in the administration of cognitive and/or behavioral assessment measures, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Demonstrated exceptional verbal and written communication skills
Highly Desirable Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in a science or health science field
Experience administering cognitive and behavioral assessments with children
Proven experience working with young children and/or families with young children
Desirable Qualifications:
Knowledge of neuroanatomy
Experience in the conduct of social science research
Familiarity with current technologies facilitating virtual interaction and data collection
