Employment Type: Full-time

Req: R0020324

The Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Virginia is seeking a Research Associate (Postdoctoral level) to work under the supervision of Dr. Matthew Lazzara, Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering.

The successful candidate will participate in a multi-institution collaborative project (with the other labs at Lehigh University and MIT) that was recently funded as an NIH R01. Primary objectives are to understand the structural basis for regulation of receptor-like protein tyrosine phosphatases (RPTP) and the systems-level consequences of RPTP activity modulation through mutation or use of novel peptide binders. The successful candidate in the Lazzara lab will develop high dimensional experimental datasets to characterize the cell signaling and phenotypic consequences of RPTP activity modulation and use those measurements to build data-driven models, which will be experimentally validated. The successful candidate will develop experimental skills in cell signaling and cancer cell biology as well as data science skills that can be broadly applied to the study of large, complex biological datasets.

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have a PhD in Chemical Engineering, Biomedical or Biological Engineering, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, or a related field by the start date. Experience in mammalian cell culture and basic molecular cell biology skills is required. Experience with application of computational modeling, especially data-driven modeling, to biological problems is preferred. The applicant should also have a track record of mentorship of undergraduate and/or graduate researchers and strong writing ability as evidenced by prior peer-reviewed publications and grant/fellowship applications.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Apply at https://uva.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com/UVAJobs and attach a cover letter indicating research interests, a detailed curriculum vitae, and contact information for three references. Please note that multiple documents can be uploaded in the CV box. Make sure to upload all the documents to complete your application.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Review of applications will begin on December 31, 2020 and the posting will remain open until filled. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment.

This is a one-year appointment that may be renewed for up to two additional one-year terms, contingent upon available funding and satisfactory performance.
