Job Info

The Massachusetts General Hospital Mentored Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship in the Cardiovascular Thrombosis Laboratory

We are looking for a dedicated post-doctoral research fellow to join our laboratory at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). Our Hemostasis and Thrombosis Post-Doctoral Mentored Research Fellowship at MGH is designed to provide one to two years of training in the laboratory study of coagulation disorders for an MD, MD/PhD, or a PhD with interest in translational and laboratory medical research.

The fellowship will provide salary support, laboratory facilities, and mentoring for work in an area of hemostasis or thrombosis and vascular biology. Present laboratory projects include 1) use of epifluorescence digital video-microscopy to visualize arterial/arteriolar thrombosis in real time via microfluidics and real-time image processing of platelets adhering to and aggregating upon a surrogate vessel wall in flowing blood, 2) improved diagnostic accuracy in Von Willebrand Disease (VWD), 3) the role of the VWF pro-peptide in platelet adhesion/aggregation in VWD, 3) evaluation of bleeding in women and girls with menorrhagia, 4) localization of factor VIII and factor VIIa to platelet membranes in real-time in flowing blood, and 5) development of an effective therapy for the enterohemorrhagic hemolytic uremic syndrome (eHUS), a devastating thrombotic microangiopathy, using parallel animal and human cell culture models. Only supportive care is presently available for this condition.

The fellowship is supported by NIH funds and is mentored by Eric F. Grabowski, MD, DSci, Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, Director of the Cardiovascular Thrombosis Laboratory, and a pediatric hematologist/oncologist at MGH, with assistance from outstanding other faculty in medical hematology and laboratory coagulation. Dr. Grabowski is also the Medical Director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Comprehensive Hemophilia Treatment Center. The MGH is a teaching hospital of the Harvard Medical School. Laboratory facilities for this opportunity are located on the main MGH campus. The fellowship will include an appointment in the Department of Pediatrics and, depending on the applicant's background, the possibility of an appointment at the Harvard Medical School. If interested, please send your CV and a personal statement to Dr. Grabowski at EGrabowski@MGH.Harvard.edu. Interviews are possible via ZOOM during the present COVID-19 crisis.
