We are looking for a talented & motivated Associate Research Scientist or Research Scientist in our Plastics Processes & Circularity department. The primary purpose of this role is to provide expertise for the conceptualization, modeling, engineering, and economic evaluation of new process designs as a member of our Engineering Fundamentals R&D team. The position will be located in Lake Jackson, TX at our Texas Innovation Center - a premier work environment with modern offices & laboratories equipped with the latest technology.
The Research Scientist role in our team will be responsible for applying scientific and engineering skills to develop new and sustainable chemical processes. This position in particular will have a heightened focus in the area of advanced recycling. Accordingly, this role will have close alignment with Dow's Sustainability ambitions for plastics circularity, improving energy efficiency, and reducing carbon emissions. The successful candidate will be required to have the technical background to provide support for both technical and economic evaluations of new process concepts. Primary duties will be to lead various research projects related to these new process concepts, beginning with demonstration at a lab/pilot scale and then assisting larger project teams in advancing technologies up to a commercial production scale.
Responsibilities / Duties
Conceptualization of new process designs, and risk/reward analysis of various concepts
Conduct technical and economic evaluation of new process technology ideas
Define and conduct proof-of-concept testing in a lab environment, including contributing to design of new experimental lab apparatuses where needed
Utilize reaction engineering and process engineering skills to scale-up new technologies, including use of process modeling/simulation tools
Assess competitive technologies and IP landscape for assigned projects
Demonstrate ability to plan, develop, evaluate, and implement technology using creative and scientifically sound methodology
Demonstrate competency in the use of experimental methods, data handling, and documentation
Keep current with broader industry & academic trends in Hydrocarbons and Plastics process development
Demonstrate a working knowledge of team alignment with R&D and Business goals
Serve as a peer coach and provide constructive advice within assigned project teams
Effectively & appropriately communicate to both internal and external audiences
Required Qualifications
MS or PhD in Chemical Engineering
Ability to work independently and drive projects to completion
Strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills
Must work effectively in multi-functional environment to understand, communicate, coordinate, and implement business objectives
Desire to learn and understand new technologies, and applications of those technologies
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with process modeling software (AspenPlus, VLXE).
Prior industrial experience in pilot plant or manufacturing plant operations, ideally involving troubleshooting real world problems and developing innovative & practical solutions.
Skills in the areas of process design/modeling, life cycle analysis, process optimization, process intensification, and/or process improvement.
