Position Purpose:

Is responsible for overseeing general operations of key retail evening operations located on campus: Novack Café, Byte Venues, Courtyard Café, Collis Café & Market and Snack Bars to ensure smooth operation of service, compliance to brand and Dining specification and procedures. Focuses on customer service, enforcement of safety, sanitary procedures, and policies for evening workforce. Reports to Director of Retail and acts in a support role for each retail manager of the locations. Communicates with responsible retail manager on observations, actions, and improvement opportunities. Conducts quality assurance audits, creates action plans through collaboration with responsible manager in each location. This is a second shift position focused on evening operations.



Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp:

Bachelors plus 3-5 years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Minimum three years of food service retail experience including purchasing, expense control, monitoring budgets, sales, inventories, and financial reports.
  • Minimum three years of food service experience including food preparation and production.
  • Minimum two years of relevant supervisory experience.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be computer literate and capable of learning inhouse software tools
  • Possess a valid driver's license.



Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in working in a diverse, inclusive workplace.
  • Five years of retail experience with emphasis on merchandising, food service and/or working with national brand concepts preferred.
  • Five years of general food service experience in high quality, large volume food production operations with diverse menu make-up preferred.
  • Five years of relevant supervisory/management experience.

Description:

Shift Operations

  • Collaborates with unit retail manager to oversee and ensure effective and efficient operations while participating in the day-to-day shift operations for evening retail venues.
  • Ensures staff are compliant with Dartmouth Dining standards and concept expectations.
  • Verifies proper register operation and transactional recording to include meal plan balance usage, verification of credit card sales.
  • Confirms work assignments and adjusts as required to balance changes in customer service needs, available staff, and timing of food preparation.
  • Enforces health and sanitation policies and procedures with concern to proper handling and preparation of food items and ensures that quality and portion control standards are maintained.
  • Ensures observance of liquor license laws, when appropriate.
  • Responds to customer feedback to include compliments and complaints about quantity, quality of food, customer service, and experience. Seeks to satisfy customer needs.
  • Ensures cleanliness and oversees general appearance of locations and uniform standards.
  • Provides evening supervision of students and staff working in various properties.
  • Ensures adequate distribution of staff on each shift and independently determines when additional staff is needed while adhering to budgetary requirements. Communicates changes to responsible manager.
  • Communicates policies and instructions to employees effectively.
  • Monitors and evaluates work performance of staff to ensure compliance with expectations, productivity, quality, and customer service standards.
  • Identifies and addresses performance problems, recommends training or initiates appropriate corrective action. Implements disciplinary measures, when necessary, e.g. verbal warnings or corrective instructions, and submits follow-up documentation to Admin HR Services as outlined in the union contract.

Brand Compliance/Guest Service

  • Sets and demonstrates the highest in customer service standards, professionalism, engagement, and proactivity to serve a diverse community exceptionally. Focuses team activities, staff behaviors and interactions on constantly improving the experience for guests.
  • Creates internal expectations and standards that support and build onto Dartmouth Dining's operating practices and Culture of Service guiding principles. Trains and develops associates on those behavioral expectations.
  • Meets regularly with managers of evening locations to assess opportunities, operational challenges, and potential solutions.
  • Reviews guest forward impressions; upholds retail standards
  • Maximizes customer interest and sales levels by assuring displays and products are appropriately merchandised.
  • Reviews sales product inventories in coolers and displays and ensures that necessary supplies are stocked for the shift and that all stock is rotated properly.
  • Monitors sales and recommends appropriate changes, based on evening observations and item popularity. Makes recommendations regarding menu development; may compute cost and price analysis.
  • Assists manager in controlling potential shrink of product by staff and guests.
  • Works with other supervisors and managers in communicating information and in planning and making changes to cafe/facility procedures.
  • Participates and complies with brand concept's expectations, trainings, policies, procedures and/or agreements to properly represent those outside entities to the public.
  • As requested, attends brand concept's trainings like Starbuck's, developmental workshops, required meetings and can be internally certified as compliant with those trainings as needed.
  • Spends appropriate time reviewing and understanding brand procedures to be an effective teacher of and supervisor to staff executing the operational standards.

Training & Staff Development

  • Under the direction of the Director of Retail; creates training programs for staff to support the various operations to include customer service, food safety and service process
  • Assists in the training of new staff on the work practices of the particular venue
  • Identifies areas of improvement through weekly audits of venues
  • Supports manager of locations to develop goals for key staff members and positions, i.e. shift supervisors, aspiring personnel and closing staff

Facility/Equipment Maintenance

  • Maintains continuing surveillance over physical facilities, ensuring cleanliness, organization, and security of location during operational and non-operational times.

  • Ensures positive relationship with building owner related to impact of service within building space, appropriate handling of issues and campus goodwill.
