Overview

The Gibson laboratory in the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology at St Jude Children's Research Hospital is looking for a full-time staff scientist with experience in biochemistry, molecular biology, or quantitative biophysical techniques. The Gibson group is a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative research environment in which novel assays are developed and used to better understand the physical mechanisms that package our genome, with a particular emphasis on the role of phase transitions in chromatin organization. The successful candidate will carry out biochemical assays such as protein and nucleic acid expression, purification, and labeling. Effective interpersonal skills, such as the ability to communicate their scientific activities in written and oral form, are essential for this role.Preferred Qualifications include:

    Proven expertise in the design and construction of protein expression plasmidsKnowledge of protein expression in both microbial and mammalian systemsExtensive experience in protein chromatography and affinity purification using an FPLC systemFamiliarity with protein labeling techniques, including intein-, maleimide-, and click chemistry-mediated conjugationSkills in assaying protein and nucleic acid interactions, including EMSA and nuclease sensitivityCommon biochemical techniques such as SDS-PAGE analysis, UV/VIS spectroscopy, and western blottingInterest in staying current with technologies as they ariseAdopting skills as needed in different technical disciplines employed in the Gibson lab, including biophysics, advanced microscopy, genomics, and cell-based assays

Responsibilities

As a valued member of the group, you will conduct large-scale expression and purification of recombinant proteins to be used in biochemical and biophysical assays. You will be expected to independently lead various research projects, carefully document experimentation, maintain laboratory infrastructure, and communicate your findings to colleagues in the lab and with collaborators.
Minimum Education

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant scientific area is required.

  • Minimum Experience

  • Seven (7) years of relevant post-degree work experience is required
  • Five (5) years of relevant post-degree work experience is required with a Master's degree
  • Three (3) years of relevant post-degree work experience is required with a PhD
