Oncology Translational Medicine Genomics

The Translational Medicine function exists within Oncology R&D to ensure effective and strategic biomarker studies for oncology project teams. Closely interacting with the pre-clinical Discovery, Early Clinical Development, and Precision Medicine & Biosamples diagnostics functions, Translational Medicine is the single point of accountability for delivery of robust, scientifically-driven biomarkers to all Oncology project teams, providing feasibility assessments, technical validation, centralized biomarker analysis capability for clinical samples, delivery of translational science research and early clinical phase engagement.

The Global Genomics team within Translational Medicine function leverages Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and other advanced technologies to match the right patient to the right drug and support precision oncology approaches for the AZ Oncology pipeline.

Major Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Within this role you will be responsible for executing work in a genomics lab - planning, designing, and performing experimental work, then documenting and communicating results to appropriate partners.

  • Conceptualize, develop, and implement evaluations of platforms, vendors, and emerging technologies of translational utility.
  • Develop and maintain internal genomics lab capability with a focus primarily on nucleic acid isolation, library construction and sequencing on Illumina instruments.
  • Involvement in data analysis, trouble-shooting, interpretation of results, and communication back to project teams. Familiarity with instrumentation including automation and software necessary for a high-throughput genomics lab.
  • Provide technical advice and genomic/biomarker consultation to internal and external partners
  • Deliver multi-omics information to AZ project teams and other partners using NGS and other pioneering technologies.
  • Deliver biomarker assays and genomic/molecular profiling datasets leveraging sample management software, a LIMS system, laboratory automation and project tracking tools.
  • Where practical, collaborate with external partners for high-throughput sequencing, technology development, and other advanced genetics/genomics approaches.
  • Work with Translational Medicine Leads to consult on technologies, develop project biomarker plans, and use fit-for-purpose platforms.
  • Identify exploratory and clinically qualified biomarkers relevant for dose selection, dosing schedule, drug response/resistance, patient stratification, and disease progression.
  • After qualifying relevant biomarkers, work in collaboration with diagnostic, clinical, and regulatory partners to develop companion diagnostics on internal and external projects.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation in compliance with internal and external requirements. Create project reports clearly and concisely summarizing results in an electronic lab notebook.
  • Lead and participate in external presentation of results and peer reviewed journal publications.

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications
  • B.S./M.S. in a relevant science subject
  • 2 years of experience within a Scientist position
  • Experience with Next Generation Sequencing is required
  • Experience working with plasma derived circulating/cell free DNA (cfDNA) is required
  • Experience working with a LIMS and an electronic lab notebook would be advantageous
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a clear understanding of the balance of innovation, calculated risks, and project delivery
