The Senior Director for Scientific Knowledge and Expertise will develop, maintain, and make broadly accessible psychological scientific knowledge and expertise that is most relevant to the current priorities of the association. Activities will include the collection of relevant scholarly resources, the maintenance of databases to catalog scientific expertise, and the production/update of research syntheses that can be used for multiple teams within the association (e.g., within science, communications, advocacy teams, the CEO office, etc.).

Education and Experience:

  • Doctorate in psychology. Must have broad understanding of the psychological scientific literature, including multiple theories and methodologies used therein.
  • Knowledge of information research in the digital age. Ability to solve problems of substantial variety and complexity.
  • Ability to undertake tasks broad in nature, requiring ingenuity, and originality and serve as a resource to others in the resolution of complex problems and issues.
  • Ability to operate independently, and exercise latitude for independent judgment, discretion, and action.
  • Ability to train and develop staff, work successfully in a team environment, and form and maintain effective teams.
  • Excellent communication skills with a proven ability to effectively interact with all levels of employees.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft office and Research Databases.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervises the APA library staff to continuously collect references and resources that represent rigorous psychological science on a variety of high priority areas identified within the association.
  • Solicit assistance from experts outside of the association to get assistance on any given topic, as needed.
  • Writes/edits summaries of scientific knowledge in assigned high priority areas, with frequent updates to maintain current knowledge base.
  • Assignments are broadly defined and require in-depth professional level knowledge, judgment, and creativity to complete. Has authority to establish processes and procedures for assigned areas of responsibility to ensure the effective and efficient operation of functions.
  • Leads the strategic development of database(s) that will allow APA staff to quickly access a) summaries of scientific knowledge related to high priority areas within the association, and b) scientists with expertise in a variety of areas relevant to APA priorities, and c) scientists' from underrepresented backgrounds to ensure that knowledge and expertise is represented with an emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Coordinates within the association on ongoing data management projects that can be useful to scientists to navigate APA's research resources
  • Communicate with staff across the association (e.g., on communication, advocacy teams, CEO office) to understand current/future needs for scientific syntheses, and to create efficient processes to share these summaries as needed.
  • Develops metrics and measures to ensure ongoing quality assurance.
  • Other duties as assigned
