Position Overview: Responsible for accurate and reliable underwriting activities for all lines of business. Generate insurance proposals, renewals, and other insurance plan related reports, quotes, financial settlements, etc., for Marketing and Actuarial Services Departments. Primary business focus will be large accounts. Member of the response team for Request for Proposals (RFPs).

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Apply established formulas and guidelines for timely and accurate rating of existing and prospective insurance contracts. Clearly articulate the reasoning and method behind rating actions. Process insurance plan proposals, renewals, alternate and optional quotes, settlements, ASO contracts, and declinations.
  • Make necessary computations from information contained in company software and database applications, prepare all supportive documentation, assemble final information and documents properly, and distribute finished items to the proper individuals.
  • Meet with agents, group administrators, and others related to the RFP, quote, or renewal process on phone or in person having ability to not need supervisor present.
  • Establish rates from a fully insured and self-insured w/ or w/o stop loss perspective. Articulate the differences from a pro/con perspective to internal/external audiences.
  • Provide mentorship, leadership and training other underwriters.
  • Work with the RFP team and respond in a timely manner.
  • Produce and maintain charts, tables, the Actuarial Services Manual, and other various Actuarial Services documents, under the direction of supervisor.
  • Provide support to Marketing Department, brokers, and agents by offering technical expertise regarding rating and benefit evaluation.
  • Provide information to, or requests information from, group policy administrators, agents, and other internal or external customers in a prompt, professional, and courteous manner.
  • Provide backup support for other Actuarial Services Department functions when necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supporting Responsibilities:
  • Meet department and company performance and attendance expectations.
  • Follow the PacificSource privacy policy and HIPAA laws and regulations concerning confidentiality and security of protected health information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Work Experience: Minimum of 4 years of group underwriting experience in the health insurance industry, including but not limited to, the preparation of health insurance industry documents and data entry. Preference for underwriters with proposal experience, medical underwriting, and risk adjustment methods.

Education, Certificates, Licenses: Requires BS or BA degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge: Strong knowledge of underwriting concepts and ability to employ established underwriting procedures. Must be a seasoned, confident decision maker able to clearly articulate the reasoning and method behind rating actions. Accountable for the quality and accuracy of all documents, files, and records manipulated, processed, produced, entered, and delivered. Perform activities with extreme accuracy, with attention to details both subtle and obvious. Complete activities in a timely fashion. Possess the knowledge and assumes responsibility for performing the functions of the job position. Must perform, and be responsible for the functions in a manner, which promotes confidence in the person's abilities. Verify and document assumptions and decisions. Requires the ability to have a detailed understanding of PacificSource products and the functions of the Marketing and Actuarial Services Departments. Capacity to be self-motivated and to think and work independently. Ability to accomplish tasks accurately under pressure, determine priorities, and to meet deadlines. Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Windows desirable.

Environment: Work inside in a general office setting with ergonomically configured equipment. Travel is required approximately 3-5% of the time.

Physical Requirements: Stoop and bend. Sit and/or stand for extended periods of time while performing core job functions. Repetitive motions to include typing, sorting and filing. Light lifting and carrying of files and business materials. Ability to read and comprehend both written and spoken English. Communicate clearly and effectively.
