Proven quality and trustworthy performance have established widespread confidence in the HORIBA Brand.

Inspired by our unique motto, "JOY and FUN," we focus on social responsibilities by building state-of-the-art products for scientific advancement; especially for protecting health, safety, and the environment. "HORIBARIANs," the HORIBA employees all over the world, look forward to working with additional creative and entrepreneurial self-starters.

Essential Job Functions:

This position is responsible for new spectroscopy product development, including prototype construction, qualification campaigns, improving/working with optical and mechanical engineers on optomechanical designs, and data analysis (resolution/peak fitting, throughput, stray light, crosstalk/imaging distortions, sensor, and electronics characterizations).

The ideal candidate is someone with broad optomechanical experience building optical instruments and working with other specialists to bring new industrial spectroscopy products to volume production.

Systems product development work includes spectrometers with diffraction grating & optics assemblies, CCD, PDA or CMOS cameras, light source alignment, and optomechanical optimization, as well as conceiving automated tests (all optical and sensors parameters) through new or existing fixtures and robotics.

• A generalist who enjoys hands-on work, optomechanical problem solving, and design for manufacturing.

• Leading parallel projects with teams of product engineers (ME, EE, SW, Systems Tests...) developing high-performance spectrometers and complete spectroscopy systems with scientific cameras, lasers or other excitation sources, multi-leg fiber bundles.

• Build and assemble prototype spectrometers, diagnose optomechanical problems, using hand tools, 3D printer, and other fast prototype methods, designing for ramp-up prior to release to manufacturing.

• Writing thorough test reports for customers, engineering, and management (from sales phase to product ramp-ups)

• Customer interfacing to support OEM business development, and technical support of sales team in pre-sale and post-sale situations.

• Project management comes with commission incentives for various milestones of product development projects.

Skills/Experience Required:

• Bachelor's or master's degree in optics/photonics or physics.

• 5-10 years in optical instrument systems design (UV-VIS-NIR) and testing, preferably in the industrial product development field

• Broad experience with optical components such as spectrometers, cameras, lasers, LEDs, light sensors, integrating spheres, and gratings.

• Experience designing components in CAD and working with mechanical engineers on complex projects, working with machinists to solve problems, ordering custom parts, using hand tools, and making mechanical prototypes and fixtures

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• MATLAB and MS Office (especially Excel).

• Experience in hyperspectral imaging and/or imaging sensors strongly preferred for the UV-VIS range.

• Experience in Raman, Optical Emission Spectroscopy, Absorbance, Reflectance, or Fluorescence a plus.

• Experience in Zemax and other optical simulation software is a plus.

HORIBA Instruments offers a competitive compensation package that includes a 401(k) plan with a match; employee group dental, vision, life, and disability (short and long-term) paid for by the company; medical insurance, family dental and vision insurance, and supplemental life insurance available with reasonable employee contributions; employee assistance program; paid holidays, vacation, and sick time; flexible spending accounts; and educational reimbursement and commuter benefit programs.
