Cambridge Consultants develops breakthrough products, creates and licenses intellectual property, and provides business consultancy in technology-critical issues for clients worldwide. For more than 60 years, the company has been helping its clients turn business opportunities into commercial successes, whether they are launching first-to-market products, entering new markets, or expanding existing markets through the introduction of new technologies. With a team of more than 850 team members, including engineers, scientists, mathematicians and designers, in offices in Cambridge (UK), Boston (USA), Tokyo (Japan) and Singapore, Cambridge Consultants offers solutions across a diverse range of industries including medical technology, industrial and consumer products, digital health, energy and wireless communications.

Role Description

The Embedded Software (ESW) Group at Cambridge Consultants develops innovative new technology to enable world-leading product development. We work on projects ranging from small, fast-paced studies to large multidisciplinary developments of 50+ engineers. We are looking for an experienced ESW engineer to strengthen this engineering function in our Boston office.

In this role, you will contribute as a leader on our project teams in a wide variety of market segments: wireless communications, consumer products, semiconductors, aerospace, etc. Examples of such projects include:

As a member of our team, you will be involved in every stage of our technology development life cycle, from developing proof-of-concept demonstrations for initial sales leads to designing, implementing, and testing innovative new products. In addition to day-to-day project work you'll also play a part in creating the Cambridge Consultants of tomorrow: contributing to new IP generation, influencing the direction or our Embedded Software skillset development, and evolving our capabilities in groundbreaking new technologies. Your experience should include designing and developing embedded software for a variety of applications. It would be beneficial if you also have experience in at least one adjacent area, such as communications protocol design, cloud systems that communicate with embedded devices, test frameworks for embedded systems, etc.

What we offer

You will get to work on interesting projects - big and small for a wide variety of clients. Some clients have existing products and are looking for new ways to make them smaller, lower power, or more reliable; and others have a new product, a new idea, or a desire to disrupt their market sector. Either way, you will help them navigate the technology challenges they face in their endeavor.

One of the most significant upsides of work at Cambridge Consultants is that we allow our leaders to steer their careers along their own path whether it's preferring to meet and talk with clients, leading teams on innovative projects, or managing our internal teams. Our collaborative and supportive working environment allows leaders to communicate regularly with Project Managers and Business Developers to find the best project roles that ensure success for themselves and our clients.

What you'll bring

  • A Bachelor's degree in an engineering field (e.g., computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, physics, mathematics, etc.) and 10+ years of experience
  • Strong C programming and software engineering skills
  • Experience leading ESW teams
  • Experience managing or mentoring others - junior engineers or interns
  • Sharp verbal and written communication skills that you use to convey your ideas to a project team and your clients

The following are not required, but any experience in these areas would be advantageous
  • Experience leading larger, multi-disciplinary teams
  • A track record of working with other leaders to sell projects to clients
  • A Master's degree in an engineering field (e.g., computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, physics, mathematics, etc.)
  • Experience with common microprocessors, wireless protocols, and communication interfaces
  • Use of common test equipment such as DMMs, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers
