Job Description

The Poultry Biologics group is seeking a talented, versatile, innovative and highly motivated scientist with expertise in molecular virology and protein expression systems to significantly contribute in the discovery and development of poultry vaccines. The Global Biologics Research group identifies, designs, and develops novel biological products to address economically impactful diseases or conditions in livestock and companion animals. The candidate will design and implement R&D programs to advance vaccine development within Poultry Biologicals. The candidate will participate on multifunctional research teams including but not limited to analytical, formulation, and clinical. This is a laboratory position that requires expertise in virology, cell culture, cellular biology and molecular biology techniques. The ideal candidate will have relevant, hypothesis-driven research experience focused on virology and protein expression platforms and demonstrated ability to establish in vitro assays. Knowledge of and/or interest in protein biochemistry, protein engineering, epitope mapping, immunology, vaccinology is a plus. Excellent analytical, communication, organizational and interpersonal skills are essential. The position is based in Kalamazoo (Michigan, USA) with frequent interactions with colleagues and external partners located around the globe.

Position Responsibilities

  • Review, interpret and apply relevant literature applicable to the research goal.
  • Apply knowledge of biological, analytical, microbiological, and molecular biology science in the design and execution of experiments to advance projects.
  • Systematically optimize analytical parameters to establish useful and robust assays for biological products.
  • Independent and critical scientific thinking. High attention to detail.
  • Embrace, evaluate, and enable new technologies for the purpose of improving existing capabilities.
  • Work in collaboration with colleagues in analytical, formulation and clinical.
  • Serve as a technical resource to project teams by providing support in virology, protein expression platforms, protein engineering and biochemistry, required for successful project delivery. This includes open communication of experimental findings with team members, peers, and management.
  • Drive innovation and continuous improvement by conducting laboratory experiments to evaluate and implement new technologies.
  • Document experiments in electronic laboratory notebooks and records in accord with scientific protocol and applicable Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Management of lab supplies and operation of equipment autonomously.

Organizational Relationships
  • The position is located in the Global Biologics line. The Senior Scientist will interact with peers and colleagues working in disciplines that include bioanalytical science, vaccine research, molecular biology, process development, clinical, formulation, and potentially regulatory.
  • The Senior Scientist is expected to form collaborative working relationships with Project Team Leaders and line representatives within multi-disciplinary team settings.
  • Prioritization of work and ability to meet project timelines. Work efficiently with minimal supervision.

Education and Experience
  • Minimum: Ph.D. in biology, molecular biology, immunology, vaccinology, microbiology, or related fields with experience in virology and protein expression systems.
  • Desirable: Experience in the fields of analytical methods, recombinant virus expression systems, protein biochemistry, protein engineering, epitope mapping, immunology, vaccinology.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, analyze and interpret data, develop assays, and perform immunology methods.

Technical Skills Requirements
  • Required:
  • Strong documentation skills. Computer skills required: Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (writing and verbal). Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues as a member of a multi-disciplinary team. Collaboration across teams. Demonstration of initiative and self-motivation.
  • Strong technical knowledge in molecular biology (cloning, recombination, PCR, DNA synthesis, bioinformatic tools, gel electrophoresis, sequencing, sequence analysis, transfection, DNA/RNA extraction, SDS-PAGE, probing, blotting), virology (cell culture, virus propagation, recombination, growth studies, stocks), protein expression platforms (protein engineering, extraction, purification, quantification, Western Bot, ELISA, baculovirus, replicon).
  • Desirable:
  • Protein biochemistry methods (glycosylation analysis, mass spectrometry, SEC).
  • Immunology Methods (flow cytometry, ELISpot)
  • Clinical Study Design
