The Senior Scientist, Enzymology is responsible for the design and development, as well as characterizing new and existing novel polymerases that impart a gain in function for cutting-edge nucleic acid amplification and detection technologies. The ideal candidate will have experience in polymerase engineering, expert knowledge of scientific principles and concepts (such as active site mutations of polymerases and real time isothermal or PCR amplification), and a high level of scientific creativity and technical proficiency. This position will be involved in cross-functional collaboration with R&D scientists at both Sunnyvale, CA, and the Bothell, WA locations as well as Cepheid's Solna, Sweden site. Based on this cross-functional environment, this position will be exposed to, and be able to leverage a broad range of scientific strengths across Cepheid sites.

This position is part of the Assay Innovations R&D Division and will be located in Bothell, WA. At Cepheid with our GeneXpert® System, we have taken the most sophisticated molecular technology and packaged it into an automated, easy-to-use format that has quickly become the platform of choice worldwide. In Assay Innovations, we are taking the system to another level through game-changing solutions that deliver critical answers when clinicians and patients need them most regardless of where the patient is. Through strong novel enzyme development, new amplification chemistries, and molecular biology capabilities, new product innovations will ensure every patient has access to the right test at the right time.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

• Utilize innovative technologies to develop strategies for complex isothermal amplification based in vitro diagnostic assays
• Design, develop, and characterize polymerases that can utilize both natural and modified triphosphates
• Serve as R&D Subject Matter Expert for polymerase engineering and provide recommendations and risk assessments to project team

The essential requirements of the job include:

• Doctoral degree in Enzymology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or other relevant fields with 0-2 years of related work experience and extensive relevant industry experience, OR Master's degree in above fields with 3+ years of related work experience, OR Bachelor's degree in above fields with 5+ years of related work experience
• Validated knowledge of protein and nucleic acid biochemistry
• Highly experienced in enzyme kinetics, designing and developing associated analytical systems such as primer extension assays
• Experience in protein modeling and associated bioinformatic tools
• Experience with expression vectors, different protein expression systems, and all related techniques used for protein expression, purification, and characterization

It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:

• Experience in molecular evolution techniques, recombinant protein mutagenesis to modify properties of DNA or RNA polymerase enzymes
• Expertise in nucleic acid amplification and detection techniques such as multiplex isothermal amplification, PCR and RT-PCR, in addition to experience utilizing non-canonical and non-natural nucleic acid chemistries
• Expertise in designing assays and developing methods for enzyme property assessments
