Job Info

Overview

The St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (St. Jude) Biomolecular NMR Center seeks to recruit an NMR expert at the Senior Scientist level. The Department of Structural Biology of St. Jude has two major ongoing projects requiring NMR investigations: seeing the invisible states in protein kinases and studying the mechanisms of biomolecular phase separation. Preferred skills and experiences:

Extensive experience in operating Bruker NMR spectrometers;Extensive knowledge and proficiency in NMR data processing using NMRPipe and analysis using Sparky or CARA;Extensive experience in applying NMR techniques to characterizing the structure and dynamics of large proteins, using both manual and automated backbone and methyl resonance assignment methodologies; Experience in performing and analyzing protein dynamics using the CEST and CPMG NMR methods;Familiar with NMR-based 3D structure calculation and refinement;Independently motivated, detail oriented and good problem-solving ability;Excellent organizational skills, with an ability to embrace change and multi-task in an extremely fast-paced environment; Excellent communications skills and working in collaboration with other scientists; The NMR Senior Scientist will mainly perform NMR-related research, but experience with maintenance of Bruker NMR spectrometers or the willingness to learn and perform maintenance in the future, is highly desired.

Responsibilities

The NMR Senior Scientist will support studies of protein dynamics using sophisticated NMR relaxation methods, with focus on protein kinases. The kinase project utilizes ultra-high field NMR spectroscopy methods and biochemical characterization developed by the Kalodimos lab (Science 2020, 370, eabc2754) to study the human kinome. This is a large-scale project that aims to detect and structurally characterize the distinct conformational states populated by kinases, and dissect the mechanisms of allosteric regulation specifically underpinning oncogenic and drug-resistance mutations. The unparalleled NMR center at St. Jude includes three 600 MHz, two 700 MHz, six 800 MHz, one 850 MHz, and the first 1.1 GHz NMR spectrometers and two Helium recovery systems. The new staff member will be involved in NMR studies to determine 3D structures and analyze dynamics features of multiple human kinases.
