Primary Function of Position:

The Sr. User Researcher will be conducting user-centered design research efforts for Intuitive Surgical. The researcher will work with internal and external resources to conduct, analyze, and report user research with the goal to inform design decisions. The User Researcher works closely with the human factors engineers, interaction/visual/industrial designers, clinical engineers, and product marketing to inform and guide development of Intuitive products and services, and ensure that those products and services are easy to use and safe. They conduct qualitative research to gain a deep understanding of users, uses and use environments; analyze and characterize usability considerations; conduct concept evaluations to realize the impact of design concepts on user workflow, behavior and performance; translate user needs into usability requirements; and develop new tools to measure UX and inform design. This role will report to our Manager of User Research, and is part of our Advanced Human Factors Team, which leads the development of data-driven user experience considerations, principles, requirements, and heuristics to inform early stage concepts and future technology innovation.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Perform all aspects of research studies including study design, instrument development, data collection (both desktop and in the field) and management, quantitative and qualitative data analysis, reporting and dissemination, and communication with partners
  • Create actionable insights for improving products and services based on results of internally and externally-driven research
  • Present results of user research throughout the organization.
  • Serve as a member of a team that acts as a 'repository' of research-based usability knowledge.
  • Support the implementation of new technologies and systems to support user research
  • Analyze and characterize usability considerations, including physical, cognitive, social and organizational aspects of human factors that influence performance while interacting with Intuitive products.
  • Draft usability requirements.
  • Develop, integrate, and apply tools to generate UX metrics and human performance data to inform concept development.
  • Reinforce a human centered design approach across the organization.
  • Represent the Human Factors function on core teams for projects.

Qualifications

Skill/Job Requirements:

  • Minimum Education: BS in Human Factors Engineering, Cognitive Psychology, Computer Science with human-computer interface (HCI) emphasis, Human Centered Design, or related field. MS preferred.
  • Minimum 6 years relevant User Research experience. Hardware product development industry preferred.
  • Experience in medical device, or similar regulated industry, a significant plus
  • Ability to conduct user research studies in diverse populations demonstrated by a portfolio of designing and executing research studies (ideally in Health Care).
  • Ability to conduct traditional and rapid cycle evaluation of products (e.g. prototype testing, usability and user experience testing, and feasibility testing) within and beyond the lab (experimentally evaluating services, products, or tools in the field).
  • Experience with data collection tools, e.g. Qualtrics.
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize large quantities of qualitative and quantitative data using QDA software and statistical software (e.g. NVivo, atlas.ti, SPSS/SAS/Stata/R).
  • Superior ability to write accurate, clear, and concise protocols and reports in a timely manner.
  • Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to interface with customers and consultants in a highly professional manner.
  • Ability to work with and across various groups and levels of management within the organization, including other engineering groups, marketing, clinical engineering, and design. Excellent collaboration skills.
  • Ability to change elevations quickly as well as an appetite for fuzzy front-end development.
  • Ability to travel internationally, as well as domestically (up to 40%).
